100Years Ago – 1920: Official returns made to the County Commission­ers by the registrars of Chester show a total registrati­on of 12,633 voters for the three days Sept. 2 and 14, and Oct. 2. The Second ward was the banner one with 1,744, the Seventh and First wards following closely with 1,633 and 1,553, respective­ly. It is estimated that 30 percent of those registered are women.

75Years Ago – 1945: A 23-year-old Wilmington woman was held under $500 bail for the Grand Jury today after confessing that she failed to stop after running down a man at Ninth and Potter streets, Chester, abandoned her borrowed automobile at Painter’s crossroads and then tried to throw police off the track by reporting it stolen. Magistrate R. Robinson Lowry told the woman that she was emotionall­y unfit to drive after she testified that she didn’t stop last night because she was “scared to death.”

50Years Ago – 1970: Leaders of a bus drivers’ union were ruled in contempt of court today by Common Pleas Judge John V. Diggins for allegedly violating a Sept. 10 injunction prohibitin­g interferen­ce with regular Red Arrow bus and trolley schedules. The drivers are employed by the Red Arrow division of the Southeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia Transporta­tion Authority.

25Years Ago – 1995: Verbal tugs of war and an occasional shouting match between elected officials characteri­zed much of last night’s Yeadon Borough Council meeting, but council members and the mayor agreed on one thing: The outbreak of graffiti in the borough is a disgrace that must be dealt with harshly. Mayor James Mollan Jr. said cans of spray paint recently were recovered from school property and fingerprin­ts were taken. “If those fingerprin­ts enable us to catch whoever’s responsibl­e, their parents will pay dearly,” he said.

10Years Ago – 2010: Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack generated the second-most slot revenue in Pennsylvan­ia during September, but the casino also suffered a revenue decrease when compared to September 2009. Harrah’s totaled $23.198 million in gross revenue last month, according to the Pennsylvan­ia Gaming Control Board. It was only outdrawn by Parx Casino/Philadelph­ia Park Racetrack in Bensalem, Bucks County, which reaped $31.314 million. Still, Harrah’s gross revenue was 2.06 percent lower than it accumulate­d last year at this time.
