MEDIA » It just wouldn’t be October in Everybody’s Hometown without the annual Halloween parade.

Unfortunately, the current pandemic has forced the cancellation of Delco News Network’s 56th annual in-person parade of ghouls and gals, strutting their best costumes down State Street. Hopefully, the DCNN Halloween Parade will be back in full gear in 2021. However, in an effort to keep the tradition alive in 2020, the staff at the Media Theatre invites everyone to get in the Halloween spirit this fall by showing off their best costumes in a virtual party.

The Media Theatre will team up with Media Borough and the Media Business Authority to present “Spooktacular! A Virtual Halloween Party.” It’s an opportunity to be creative and be seen online dressed in the costume of choice. Even if it’s virtual, the event will showcase the spirit that is alive and well in Media, with participants dressed in costumes such as Ghostbusters, Princess Elsa, the Phantom of the Opera, Harry Potter, Elvis, Jack the Pumpkin King, zombies and other creative ensembles.

People can submit a photo or video by Sunday, Oct. 25. All ages are invited. Participants can dress up individually or with their family or friends, or with any group. Media business owners are also invited to have their staff dress up and enter the parade.

People are also invited to sing a song or recite some lines that go along with their character in a video format.

The virtual Halloween

parade will air online on the Media Theatre website and Facebook pages starting at 1 p.m. on Halloween day, Oct.

31, and will remain there for a few days. Efforts will be made to post it on the Media Business Authority sites including VisitMediaPA.

The event is safe, socially distanced, but still spirited and fun. All photos should be in jpeg format and of good quality. They can be emailed to Patrick Ward at p.ward@MediaTheatre.org. or spa_media@netzero.net. Include name and email.

Video submissions should be no longer than 60 seconds. People can sing a song or recite some memorable lines from their favorite character, and have fun. Those taking the video should use the highest quality image from their iPhone or camera and be sure to state their name in the clip. An 1080p is suggested as it has best video quality. People can get the video link to the theatre by Oct. 25 by using this Google Drive link: https://

PennDOT resumes motorcycle safety training courses

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced this week that through the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program it is partnering with multiple vendors to resume motorcycle safety training classes for Pennsylvania residents through a statewide pilot program for the rest of the calendar year. Classes were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic and are restarting with COVID-19 mitigation measures in place.

Motorcycle permit holders who complete a threewheel basic course will earn a motorcycle license with restriction prohibiting the operation a of two-wheel motorcycle.

Classes will be scheduled through the remainder of the 2020 calendar year, weather permitting, at multiple training sites throughout Pennsylvania. Class schedules are coordinated by each third-party training provider for their individual locations and additional information can be found at www.penndot.gov/ PAMSP. Additional classes and locations will continue to be added.

Considering COVID-19 health concerns, PennDOT will continue to offer a virtual motorcycle training course for individuals under 18 who are required by law to complete a department-approved motorcycle safety course before they can take the skills test and obtain their motorcycle license. PennDOT understands the importance of offering motorcycle training to the public and continues to evaluate program needs and is working hard to ensure motorcycle training continues throughout the state. PennDOT is committed to ensuring the program is sustainable for the future following the COVID-19 emergency.

Delco Ombudsmen available to help residents of long-term care facilities and their families

As COVID-19 has grappled the nation now for seven months, one group of individuals who have been most affected are residents of long-term care facilities. These facilities care for the community’s most vulnerable and frail citizens and have faced many challenges in providing the best care under the circumstances.

To prevent the virus from entering or spreading in these facilities, visiting from outsiders has not been allowed. This prolonged period of not being able to see family members has greatly affected some residents and their families. Family members long for information regarding their loved ones and residents miss the visits and social interaction.

The Delaware County Ombudsman Program advocates for the rights of residents in long-term care settings. They work to educate providers and residents of residents’ rights and help resolve issues regarding these rights when they arise.

While restricted from entering facilities, Ombudsmen fielded calls from residents and their families and worked remotely to resolve issues and provide as much information as possible. As facilities reopen for public visitation, Ombudsmen will continue to be a presence in these settings speaking with concerned residents and/or their family members. Shortly, Ombudsmen will be visible in locations permitting outdoor visitation.

Regardless of the visitation status of a facility, an Ombudsman is never out of reach. Those wishing to speak to an Ombudsman may call the Delaware County Ombudsman Program at 610-872-1868. Visit www.delcosa.org to learn more about the Ombudsman Program or if interested in becoming a volunteer Ombudsman.
