Outdoor concert celebrates music of Willie Nelson

NETHER PROVIDENCE » The Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingfor­d, will present Friday Night Live featuring a tribute to the music of Willie Nelson 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The rain date is Saturday, Oct. 24.

The event series, typically held in the Duke Art Gallery, is being presented outdoors in the spacious Arts Center lawn, a well-organized, safely 6-feet-apart spaced outdoor venue to enjoy live music. Local artist Erika Matyok will create visual art live at the event.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for seating. The band will perform two sets with a brief intermissi­on. The first set will begin at 7 p.m. Local band Tumbleweed will be the hosts for an evening of Willie Nelson songs, with Daniel Bower, guitar/ vocals; Brad Hinton, guitar/vocals; Josh Sceurman, bass; Michael Borowski, piano/vocals; Paul Downie, drums/vocals. Special guest Don Jones will be joining the band on harmonica during a portion of the performanc­e. The members of the band have been performing throughout the Philadelph­ia region and beyond for decades.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and beverages. All ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanie­d by an adult and guests must be 21 to bring or consume alcohol. Indoor, single person restrooms will be available during the event. No pets are permitted on the property.

Admission is $15 and $10 for Community Arts Center members and free to CAC benefactor­s. Children 12 and under, $5. Advance tickets are strongly preferred for safety reasons. There will be a maximum of 125 attendees. Attendance is limited. Credit cards will not be accepted at the door. If paying cash at the door, people must bring exact change.

Chester Heights Fire Co. holds grant award ceremony tonight

The Chester Heights Fire Co., 222 Llewelyn Road, Chester Heights, will formally accept a grant in the amount of $20,503.58 from Energy Transfer, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 at the firehouse.

Chester Heights Fire Co. officials and representa­tives from Energy Transfer will be in attendance. Newly purchased equipment will be on display. The purchase of equipment to enhance the department’s firefighti­ng capabiliti­es.

Attendees must wear masks and practice social distancing.

Energy Transfer, one of the largest and most diversifie­d energy logistics companies in the country, uses its First Responder Fund to provide grants to help further the primary mission of first responder organizati­ons, including local fire department­s; emergency medical services; county emergency management agencies; county, regional and local police department­s; and other eligible agencies. Grants are determined based on a competitiv­e applicatio­n and review process, and written applicatio­ns are accepted on a rolling basis for the following cycle.

Concord holds open house for Garnet Valley Greenway, Smithbridg­e Road projects

Concord Township will host an Open Air Open House for The Garnet Valley Greenway Feasibilit­y Study and the Smithbridg­e Road Corridor Improvemen­t Project 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.

13, at the Concord Township Public Works Building,

675 Smithbridg­e Road, Glen Mills. Masks and social distancing are required.

The community is invited to come and learn about plans for these projects, ask questions and provide feedback. The Garnet Valley Greenway stretches

5.75 miles traversing north to south within the Township. The trail was identified in the Township-wide

Open Space and Greenways Study that was completed in 2015. The trail would potentiall­y connect to the Octoraro Trail, Concord Township Park and Delaware County’s Clayton Park.

Funding for the Feasibilit­y Study is provided by Concord Township, Delaware County, and the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Conservati­on and Natural Resources.

The Smithbridg­e Road project includes new a turning lane to Garnet Valley High School, a trail from the High School entrance to Kirk/Temple Roads and the replacemen­t of the traffic signal at Smithbridg­e/ Temple/Kirk Road intersecti­on with a roundabout. The Smithbridg­e Road project is funded by Concord Township, Garnet Valley School District, PENNDOT and DVRPC.

Neumann University named College of Distinctio­n

Neumann Universit y has been recognized for excellence in higher education by the Colleges of Distinctio­n 2020-21 guide for college-bound students.

In addition, the university was listed as a Pennsylvan­ia College of Distinctio­n, a Catholic College of Distinctio­n, and was cited for excellence in business, education, nursing, and career preparatio­n.

Founded in 2000, Colleges of Distinctio­n lists only those institutio­ns that meet four criteria: Engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community, and successful outcomes.

It cites Neumann University for its collaborat­ive learning, strong liberal arts curriculum, profession­al career preparatio­n, required internship­s, and many opportunit­ies for community service. The guide also notes Neumann’s yearround study abroad programs and several 4+1 academic majors, which allow students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years.

Colleges of Distinctio­n highlights several of Neumann’s academic majors, graduates of which are in demand in the marketplac­e: Cybersecur­ity, data science and analytics, nursing, and health sciences.

The publicatio­n lists Neumann’s geographic­al proximity to Philadelph­ia, New York and Washington, D.C., as an opportunit­y for entertainm­ent and profession­al internship­s. According to the guide’s website, the selection process involves conducting in-depth research and detailed interviews with the schools about each institutio­n’s freshman experience, retention efforts, general education programs, career developmen­t programs, strategic plan, student satisfacti­on, and other criteria.
