100Years Ago – 1920:

Enraged when his demand to be furnished a drink of whiskey was refused, a

33-year-old drew a long bladed spring knife and began to put into execution his threat to kill all the occupants of a house at No.

5 Holland Street, Leipervill­e. When the slashing affray launched by the man had terminated, one man was dead, another dying and two others seriously injured. County Detective O’Toole found the wanted man at his No. 7 Holland St. boarding house, fully attired, lying in bed. A search of his room revealed a blood-stained knife hidden under the bed.

75Years Ago – 1945: A

fire which could be seen for a radius of 8 miles and drew hundreds of spectators swept a huge barn on the state of Walter M. Jeffords, millionair­e sportsman, near Media, Wednesday night, causing an estimated loss of $50,000. It was the second time that the barn, built on a foundation more than 150 years old, had been razed by flames.

50Years Ago – 1970:

The 12-day strike of

550 employees against Congoleum-Nairn Corp., Trainer, ended Sunday, with all shifts reporting for work today. However, the strike against the Westinghou­se Electric Corp., Tinicum, by United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers

Local 107, has entered its seventh week. A.R. Rudley, manager of the Congoleum-Nairn Corp. plant, said terms of the settlement include a general wage increase of 23 cents per hour and a new improved welfare package.

25Years Ago – 1995: The MacDade Mall is celebratin­g its 25th anniversar­y this week in a big way. “You’re only 25 once,” said mall Manager Gwen Skalish, its guiding hand for 18 years. Skalish noted the most recent improvemen­t at the mall centers around the expanded Acme supermarke­t, the anchor store near Glenolden’s South Avenue entrance.

“The Acme doubled its size and that has brought more people to the mall. The Acme now has a drycleaner­s, a Mellon-PSFS Bank branch and a video rental center,” Skalish said. 10Years Ago – 2010: The Ridley School Board recently approved a request to conduct a fundraiser by publishing a cookbook of recipes submitted by employees of the district. The proceeds will benefit many Ridley families who are in need throughout the school year of such items as uniforms, school supplies and food vouchers.
