Scanlon is a true leader in times of crisis

- Virginia Thompson, Swarthmore

To the Times:

I have been a proud federal employee for 34 years, seeing first-hand the responsibility that our government has to ensure the safety of those who call this country home.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted, more than ever, our need for sound leadership, especially in times of crisis. We’ve seen countless families thrust into the uncertainty of taking care of loved ones who have fallen ill to the virus or who have lost their businesses due to the economic recession, all while doing everything they can to put food on the table, keep a roof over their head, and pay the bills.

When COVID-19 hit, I, like many of you, never imagined my family would be affected, that is, until my husband became sick. One of the first people to call me was our Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, D-5 of Swarthmore.

She has been a hands-on leader in our community long before this pandemic found its way to our doorsteps and a steady source of hope throughout. When this administration failed to act to ensure PPE was accessible to our frontline workers, it was Mary Gay who built a coalition to help distilleries convert their production to hand sanitizer, delivering important supplies to our postal workers and medical staff. She went to bat for our region during debate in the House over CARES Act funding, bringing over $150 million in relief to families, small businesses, and municipalities in our region.

She did all of this while continuously checking in on her neighbors, including my family.

We need more people like Mary Gay in office. I am so proud to call her our Congresswoman, and I am looking forward to voting for her, once again, in the upcoming election.

We must do all we can to send this incapable administration packing. Make sure you are registered to vote. Request your mail-in ballot. Vote early where possible. Let us elect the leadership our families, and our children, deserve.
