100Years Ago – 1920: Soft drink department­s are not looked upon as a necessary adjunct to the grocery business and of sufficient importance to warrant a number of merchants in Chester conducting a general business of Sundays with the result that the crusade against Sunday sales of foodstuffs inaugurate­d two weeks ago by the Department of Public Affairs is being carried on. The action was taken following complaints received that many small grocery dealers were doing a greater amount of business on the Sabbath than on weekdays.

75Years Ago – 1945:

An explosion, said to have been caused by a “boobytrap” inside an Army tank returned from overseas to Baldwins for repairs, was set off late Friday injuring one of the workmen. Clifford Jones, 32, of Norwood, the workman, was cut about the face and hands and treated at the plant dispensary. He was then transferre­d to the Chester Hospital where he was admitted.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

The Penn Steel Castings Co. plant at Front and

Penn streets, Chester, which was wrecked by fire last February, is up for sale, the company confirmed today. A company spokesman said the 12acre site, including the real estate and equipment, was put on the market for an asking price of $1 million. Although city officials repeatedly urged company President Margaret L. Meyers to rebuild, it was widely believed since the fire that the firm would close its doors for good. 25Years Ago – 1995: The football team and cheerleade­rs from St. Cyril’s of Alexandria School in

East Lansdowne will hit the big-league Astroturf Sunday at 1:30 p.m. as they show their stuff at Veterans Stadium. Terry O’Neill, who assists Patty Pedula as the school’s cheerleadi­ng coach, said two teams are chosen by the Archdioces­e of Philadelph­ia officials for the annual event. St. Cyril’s will play Mother of Divine Providence. O’Neill said 54 players and 46 cheerleade­rs would attend.

10Years Ago – 2010:

Chester Township officials want to meet with insurance company representa­tives and county and federal authoritie­s to determine whether a group of homes damaged by floods seven times in the last 40 years can be demolished in the near future. About 65 homes in the Toby Farms section of the township were damaged two weeks ago when the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole flooded the nearby Chester Creek.
