100Years Ago – 1920: During recent weeks and particularly since the suffrage amendment was ratified, the advisability of urging the appointment of at least two policewomen as regular members of the Chester Police Department has been a topic for discussion among some of the leading business men and citizens, many of whom favor the plan that has been adopted in some of the larger cities of the country, including New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, Los Angeles, Detroit and Cleveland. A prominent citizen, speaking on the subject last evening said, “Chester should be as progressive in this line as in others and follow the example set by the larger cities, where the police women have given entire satisfaction and have made the innovation thoroughly successful.”
75Years Ago – 1945:
The Chester area has a quota of $9,520,000, of the county’s total
$13,600,000, for the Victory Loan campaign which opens Monday, Oct.
29, announced Clifford H. Peoples, local chairman who successfully led the Seventh War Loan drive, and Douglas R. Faith, county chairman of the War Finance Committee.
50 Years Ago – 1970: A fresh outbreak of violence at the strike-torn Westinghouse Electric Corp. Lester plant did considerable damage early Sunday morning. A trailer serving as a temporary office near the plant’s Gate I was destroyed by fire about 4:50 a.m.
25Years Ago – 1995:
After a week’s delay, Chester City Council yesterday accepted a $1 million loan from the state Department of Community Affairs and paid some bills. Payments to be made are lead by
$446,890.95to PECO Energy Co. After payment, a $419,965 balance will remain. PECO’s bill is for the current year. Waste Management will receive
$238,000 toward its
$461,668 bill - $53,332 for 1995 and $184,668 for 1994.
10Years Ago – 2010:
Morton police have issued an arrest warrant for a Swarthmore man charged with stealing five leather coats from Kohl’s, fleeing police and leaving behind his 2-year-old daughter in a store stroller in the parking lot along with the coats. A security guard flagged down borough Police Officer Keith Lockhart, who was on routine patrol in the parking lot. As the officer approached, the man ran back into the store. Lockhart gave chase before the man escaped through a rear door.
