Electing a new president

- Rev. Richard C. Dalton, St. Louis, MO

To the Times:

The 2020 presidential election will be won on personality, electoral votes, and party politics. Party politics has more to do with a group consciousness (or agree and think like me mentality) rather than how we prayerfully and responsibly navigate through making good moral choices, to maintain the sacredness of our constitutional values and how they protect our individual freedoms. This constitutional sacredness and “one nation under God”, is what has made America a world power. Will America be great again? Righteousness and integrity make a nation or person great, not superficial personality traits.

This personality, irrational, presidential decision making bridge we are crossing, is in line with the destructive forces of our nation’s 2020 health, social, and economic crisis. We have been infected with the “political personality virus” while looking square in the face of critical social, racial, economic, and religious discord. Even Evangelicals give the impression if you vote a certain way all is lost. Whatever happened to the sovereignty of God and Divine intervention? I mean, who is in charge? Democrats, Republicans, Independents or God (be careful)? Before you go to the polls to vote, look at the policies of all parties and their future implications. Especially, their future implications. Because your grandchildren will have to live with those implications. Superficial, cosmetic, personality voting will not make America great again. In terms of changing the political landscape, this may sound novel, but what about “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? Too radical? Not political enough? Oh well ... Go vote.
