100Years Ago – 1920: Thomas Locke, ex-constable of the Ninth Ward, Chester, is in a serious condition at the Chester Hospital following a gunshot wound of the left abdominal region sustained during gun play in a house at 125 Central Ave. late last night, LeRoy Watts, age 20, was arrested several hours after the shooting. According to witnesses, Locke entered the house where Watts and his mother live and threatened to kill young Watts. Then leaving the house, it is said, he became intoxicate­d and returned later. Attacking Mrs.

Watts, be began maltreatin­g her. After she had fallen to the floor, he is alleged to have kicked her. Seeing this, Watts ran upstairs, procured a revolver from a bureau drawer and after Locke reused to refrain from any further attacks, he fired three shots at him, hitting him once in the left side. Dropping the gun, Watts fled.

75Years Ago – 1945:

Leonard’s general store, Pleasantvi­ew Avenue, Linwood Park, and its contents were destroyed by fire early Sunday morning, entailing a loss of about $3,000. World-renowned pediatric neurosurge­on Ben Carson will speak at Widener University Monday. In 2001, Carson was named by CNN and TIME magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists. That same year, he was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 89 “Living Legends.” He also received the 2006 Spingarn Medal, which is the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP.
