Wreaths Across America ceremony honors vets at Mount Moriah Cemetery
YEADON » A Wreaths Across America ceremony will be held Saturday, Dec.
19, at the Naval Asylum Plot on the Yeadon, Delaware County, side of Mount Moriah Cemetery, along Cobbs Creek Parkway. The wreaths will be placed at
10 a.m. and the ceremony starts promptly at noon in conjunction with all WAA events across the country and will happen rain, snow, or shine. Due to the
COVID-19 restrictions in place, the ceremony will be limited to a small group of people. Everyone else can still honor fallen military through video and photos that will be posted on the Friends of Mount Moriah Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/fommci).
Wreaths Across America is a nationwide event that commemorates deceased veterans by laying a wreath at the graves of those who have served. This is the sixth year the Friends of Mount Moriah have participated in this ceremony.
The event will feature a short talk by James Hubbard, who has done extensive research on AfricanAmerican sailors of the Civil War. Hubbard was born and raised in Philadelphia and received a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law. He is a member of the 3rd Regiment USCT re-enactors and is a storyteller (or docent) at the historical Johnson House in the Germantown section of Philadel
phia. A bagpiper will also perform.
The Naval Asylum Plot National Cemeter y at Mount Moriah is currently the only “Naval Cemetery” overseen by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs - National Cemetery Administration (VA-NCA). The 10-acre plot is the final resting place for over 2,100 Navy and Marine veterans from the Revolutionary War through Vietnam.
One of Philadelphia’s oldest and most historic cemeteries, Mount Moriah Cemetery is a 200-acre site that is being restored by the Friends group. It is the final resting place of many people significant to the history and culture of Philadelphia, with many notable citizens from politics, entertainment, sports and business, as well as over 5,000 veter
ans from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, War of 1812, the Korean War, World Wars 1 and 2, and others.
Abruzzese Delco announces new bilingual radio program
The Associazione Regionale Abruzzese Delco has engaged the talents of Melissa Cannavo-Marino to host WVLT 92.1 FM’s “Viaggio Musicale,” a bi-lingual program on the air at 6 p.m. Sundays. The program is produced by ARA Delco’s Italian-American Media Productions and will appeal to Italians, ItalianAmericans and “lovers of all things Italian.”
The format includes community news, Italian classic and contemporary music and songs from Italy’s
golden era of Rock n’ Roll with performances by Italian, Italian-American and well-known American singers .
L’Associazione Regionale Abruzzese Delco President Nicholas Rapagnani of Brookhaven credited the program’s sponsors, Cento Foods, Carman Lincoln in New Castle, Del., Wilmington University, Amoroso Baking Co., Rosa Foods, Serpe Bakery Shop in Elsmere, Del., and Cannavo-Marino’s dedication in bringing “Viaggio Musicale” to WVLT-FM.
Cannavo-Marino began broadcasting on IABN, Philadelphia’s full-time Italian language network in 1999. In 2003, she moved to Italy to study at the American University of Rome, earning a degree in mass communications and public relations, and her Italian Triennale degree through a joint program with the University of Macerata.
Cannavo-Marino earned a Master’s degree in marketing from Wilmington University and remains active in the tri-state region’s Italian-American community.
She is a board member of the Delaware ItalianAmerican Education Association and a former Commissioner on the Gloucester County Italian Heritage Commission.
She also hosts “Mattinata Musicale” Sunday mornings at 8 on Wilmington radio WILM-AM 1450 during the station’s morning Italian program line-up.
Lacy joins Family Support Line board of directors
Shawn Lacy is the newest member of Family Support Line’s board of directors. Lacy attended Rutgers University School of Law and served as a child advocate attorney for children involved in the Child Welfare System and Family Court of Philadelphia before becoming assistant chief of the Child Advocacy Unit of the Defender Association of Philadelphia.
Lacy served for 11 years as executive director of the nonprofit agency, Family Support Services, supporting 175 staff members in their provision of intensive center-based and community-based services to children and families in the realm of abuse and neglect prevention, early intervention education services, parenting education, kindergarten enrichment, and preschool education.
In 2017, she led the organization in its transition as an affiliate of Elwyn and received the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey Executive Director Award (Delaware County). In 2018, she was named VP of Human Resources for Elwyn and served in that capacity for a year. Also, in 2018, Shawn joined Lakeside Global Institute as a certified trauma trainer sharing knowledge of trauma with professionals, parents, and caregivers—what it feels like, how it shows up, and how to best respond. Simultaneously, in
2019, she joined the team of newly elected Pennsylvania Sen. Tim Kearny, D-26 of Swarthmore, where she served as the director of constituent relations developing the constituent relations team in the new Senate office. She left Kearney’s office in 2019 to focus on the trauma work.
Family Support Line Family Support Line works to advance the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse. Its services include comprehensive prevention programs, specialized treatment, professional training, and advocacy.
The nonprofit organization, located in Media, has been serving children, tweens, and teens in Delaware County for over
30 years, protecting their overall health and well-being.
