100Years Ago – 1920: The ban has been placed on all gambling activities in Chester. Every member of the police department has been given positive instructio­ns as to what is expected of him in seeing that the edict issued by the mayor is enforced. Each and every officer will be held accountabl­e for compliance with the order on his beat. The decision is final.

75Years Ago – 1945:

More than 700men and women have made reservatio­ns for the testimonia­l dinner to Judge E. Wallace Chadwick Wednesday evening in the BellevueSt­ratford Hotel, Philadelph­ia. The tickets state that dress will be informal. With Owen J. Roberts, retired justice of the United States Supreme Court, and Rev. David Braun, pastor of the Swarthmore Presbyteri­an Church, as principal speakers, the toastmaste­r will be Earle G. Harrison, dean of the Law School at the University of Pennsylvan­ia.

50Years Ago – 1970:

From the Associated Press, Washington: The Food and Drug Administra­tion says Americans can keep on eating canned tuna although excess mercury has been found in more than one of every five cans sampled. Should housewives continue to buy all the canned tuna they want and feed it to their families? “Absolutely,” said FDA Commission Charles C. Edwards. “This is not a health hazard.”

25Years Ago – 1995:

Rose Venini of Drexel Hill passed the century mark three years ago and is enjoying the good life. This weekend, the woman who devoted her entire life to her family, will be surrounded by her five children for a quiet celebratio­n on her 103 birthday. The house will be bustling if the remaining three generation­s of Veninis, the 10 grandchild­ren, 18 great-grandchild­ren and 5 great-greatgrand­children, stop to visit. She resides with her son, Albert, 64, on the same block as her daughter, Ann Pompo, 75. Sons, Tony,

67, and Michael, 72, live in Drexel Hilland Charles, 62, has a house farthest away - in Broomall.

10Years Ago – 2010:

A Ridley Township man allegedly had a blood alcohol content of .62 when he was found passed out in a car in front of a Glenolden Wawa, according to court documents. Cpl. Stephen Powers responded to the Wawa and found the man, who appeared unconsciou­s. Below the driver’s seat and on the front passenger seat were numerous cans of cold Bud Ice beer, some empty and some full.
