Drexel, Villanova pause due to COVID

Add the women’s programs from Drexel and Villanova to list of teams that have paused activities due to the coronaviru­s pandemic.

The Dragons (2-2) announced Tuesday that they have stopped all activ ities and postponed three games for COVID-19 protocols involving a Tier 1 individual within the program. Tier 1 personnel are players, coaches and support staff closely associated with the team.

Drexel was supposed to visit La Salle on Wednesday, host Old Dominion on Sunday and Saint Joseph’s next Tuesday. Those games have been postponed.

Villanova (6- 0) was scheduled to travel to Providence for a Big East game Wednesday, but that game was postponed for precaution­ary reasons because the Wildcats were the last team to play Drexel. Villanova defeated the Dragons, 48-46, last Sunday at Finneran Pavilion.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Creighton on Saturday and UConn next Tuesday. Those games were still listed as on as of Tuesday.

55.6 percent from beyond the arc to improve to 2-0. Graduate student Alayna Gribble had just one miss. She was 7-for-8 overall and 5-for-5 from

3-point range to finish with a game-high 19 points.

Fellow graduate student Alexis Santarelli also was nearly perfect from the field, going 5-for-6 with 11 points. Lula Roig and Katie Mayock pitched in with eight points each. Mary Sheehan (Cardinal O’Hara All-Delc0) added seven points, while Gabby Smalls contribute­d six points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks had 10 players score at least four points each.

Defensivel­y, SJU held Monmouth to 28.8 shooting overall and 23.1 percent from 3-point range.

The Hawks open Atlantic 10 play at home Saturday against Big 5 rival La Salle (1 p.m.). That will be the Hawks’ last game until a Jan. 1 meeting with Massachuse­tts at Hagan Arena.

Jennifer Louro led three Monmouth players in double figures with 12 points.
