100 Years Ago – 1920:

Chief of Police J.H. Deavenport has opened the door for Mayor William T. Ramsey to close saloons in Chester violating the law and to break up much of the robbery and thievery that has been going on for some time. The chief says that in a short time he expects so much violation of the law that his force will not be able to cope with the situation. No more opportune time could be imagined for the mayor to assert his authority than the present yuletide season, when the streets of the city should be as free as the air for women and children to come to do their shopping without being molested by drunks or having their money taken by slick thieves.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

Edward J. Frysinger, 90, widely-known editorial writer, reporter and publicity manager, died Thursday at 11 a.m. at his residence, 116 E. Fourth St., Chester. He started in newspaper work as a printer, but had been a reporter, editorial writer, night editor and managing editor of daily papers all over the East Coast. As a publicity man, he had managed William C. Sproul’s campaign for governor among many other campaigns.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

A Westinghou­se Electric Corp. offer aimed at ending the 115-day-old Lester plant strike was rejected by a voice vote Sunday night at the headquarte­rs of United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers Local 10. Of the estimated

3,500 at the meeting, about 1,000 were inside the building and the rest were outside listening to the union leaders’ report via loudspeake­rs.a

25 Years Ago – 1995: An

18-year-old Sharon Hill resident in possession of

10 packets of suspected cocaine on school property faces drug violation charges, Upper Darby police said Monday. He was arrested Dec. 5 at Monsignor Bonner High School after Bonner deans Edward Fornias and Robert McLaughlin, investigat­ing an unrelated matter, searched the student and found a folded piece of paper containing the 10 packets of suspected drugs.

10Years Ago – 2010: A gun battle in Stonehurst about 1:30 a.m. Sunday left a trail of destructio­n, Upper Darby police said Monday. “It was a big shootout between four guys, we believe armed with a .45 semi-automatic, and a man staying in a house on Cleveland Avenue,” Police Superinten­dent Michael Chitwood said.
