100 Years Ago – 1920:

A touching tragedy was enacted last night when a tiny girl, about 4 years old, was found wandering about in the vicinity of Seventh and Welsh streets, Chester, by a woman who refused to disclose her name. This kind-hearted woman, after buying candy for the child, who answered to the name of Anna, brought her to the police headquarte­rs. Captain Henry Robinson immediatel­y got in touch with Juvenile Court, where it was discovered that the tot had been brought there a half an hour before she was found on the street. The authoritie­s of the Juvenile Court said that a woman named Mrs. Brown brought the child in and asked the officers to take care of her. After learning the child’s father was supposed to pay board, the directors refused the child. It is believed that the attempt to leave the child on the hands of the county failing, the woman waxed desperate and deserted the child.

75 Years Ago – 1945:

Seven fires in and near Chester took a heavy toll over the weekend. Ridley Township and Clifton Heights fires causing the most damage, two houses in each community being razed to ground amid wild scenes of confusion as the occupants fled in their

night clothes.

50 Years Ago – 1970:

Judge James H. Gorbey said today he resigned Wednesday from the Delaware County Common Pleas Court and would be sworn in as a federal judge at 11 a.m. Jan. 4.

25 Years Ago – 1995:

Mary Fox believes in angels. In their human form, two 10-year-old neighbors of the Brent Road, Upper Darby, resident came to her rescue after she slipped on ice and fell face first in snow, suffering a dislocated shoulder. Fox, 68, says she laid in the snow about a half-hour Wednesday before her cries for help were heard by Scott Andrews and

Taso Kavalliera­tos, fifthgrade students at Bywood Elementary School.

10 Years Ago – 2010:

Chester City Council passed a $41.6 million operating budget for 2011 at Wednesday’s meeting, holding the line on real estate millage for the 16th straight year and reducing earnedinco­me taxes. The budget increased funding to J. Lewis Crozer Library by 50 percent for the second consecutiv­e year and committed revenue to make the Chester Upland School District a sponsor of Delaware County Community College.
