100Years Ago – 1920:

At the opening session of License Court in Media this morning, Judge Isaac Johnson and Judge William B. Broomall decided to hold under advisement the applicatio­ns of the renewal of all licenses to hotels, taverns and bottlers until paper-books could be prepared by the attorneys interests and argument had upon the question “Whether or not the Court had any power to act in the premises?” The court had already granted renewal of licenses in the first three cases on the list when attorney James L. Rankin rose from his seat and challenged the power of the License Court to perpetuate places where “hooch” was sold in the halcyon days.

75Years Ago – 1945:

A Chester WAVE becomes the first woman to put to sea as a member of the crew of a United States warship. Ph. M. 1/c Edith Cramp, 24, daughter of Major and Mrs. Edmund Cramp, and niece of Col and Mrs. Frank K. Hyatt, of PMC, has been assigned to duty aboard the assault transport Hendry, now enroute to Pearl Harbor, Midway and other Pacific bases, the Navy announced today.

50Years Ago – 1970:

A little boy whom everyone called “Apples” because of his rosy cheeks was asked by his teacher one winter’s morning what he wanted to be when he grew up. The boy stood up at his desk at St. Robert’s Catholic School in Chester and said proudly he wanted to be Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This was way back in the second grade. The boy was James H. Gorbey. Last Wednesday, at an informal ceremony in Philadelph­ia, he was sworn in as a U.S. District Court judge for Easter Pennsylvan­ia.

Ago – 1995: An electrical fire in an escalator motor at the Value City department store, Springfiel­d, yesterday filled the building with smoke, which sent 50 employees and about 50 bargain-hunting shoppers into the cold. The store, located at 721 Sproul Road, re-opened at 3 p.m. Tom Bowes, the store’s assistant manager, said the fire didn’t have a big impact on sales for the day.

10Years Ago – 2010:

Ridley Township commission­ers recently announced the establishm­ent of the Anne E. Howanski Memorial Scholarshi­p Fund in honor of the longtime township manager who died last

April after 59 years of service to the township. The first $1,000 scholarshi­p will be given to a township resident who will graduate from high school in 2011.
