John R. Patterson, MD.

(1929-2020) John R. Patterson, MD., of Havertown, PA died on December 22, 2020.

He was born in Washington, PA in 1929, and graduated from Washington and Jefferson College. He served as a Major in the United States Air force, and after an honorable discharge completed his medical training at Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He spent his career on staff at Jefferson Hospital and as a member of the faculty of the department of Rheumatolo­gy, retiring from there after 50 years.

He married Margaret (Peggy) Broschart and they settled in Havertown, PA where they raised five children. He was a devoted father and husband to Peggy until her death in 1994. As a physician, he took the oath of “First, do no harm” above and beyond. He believed that all patients deserved to be treated, regardless of their ability to pay. He often took food and homemade goods as payment. He is remembered for his genuine kindness and seeing the good in all. He had a thirst for knowledge, an appreciati­on for the performing arts, was an avid golfer, and enjoyed time with friends.

He was predecease­d by his sister Ann McMahon. He is survived by his five children John (Michele), Mary Susan Christophe­r (Bob), Nancy Ramsey (Bill), Kathleen Curry (Jeff ) and Christophe­r along with 13 grandchild­ren, three great grandchild­ren and eight nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to for Visitation on December 29, 2020 from 10:30-11:30 AM St. Bernadette Church, Turner Ave., Drexel Hill, PA. Mass immediatel­y following at 11:30 AM. Interment SS Peter and Paul, Springfiel­d, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons in his memory may be made in support of The Department of Family Medicine at Jefferson.
