Some opinions aren’t worth sharing

To the Times:

I have been a longtime reader of the Daily Times, even though I moved from Delco around 25 years ago. Many of my friends and family remain in the area, and I have a significant interest in how things are going.

However, it pains me to see conspiracy theories and calls for civil war peddled in your letters to the editor section. Surely your newspaper is better than this? This is not a discussion on whether Carson Wentz is as good as we hoped or whether local government spends too much time on this and not enough of that. Instead, you’re publishing far-right internet message board chatter and fear-mongering. I know this is the opinion section, but surely not all opinions deserve publication? If I were to write in with an opinion that everyone with brown eyes can’t be trusted and that I’m armed and they need to watch their backs, surely you wouldn’t print that?

So why, for instance, would you print the 17 Dec. letter from John E. Fitzgerald. In his letter he suggests that the election was stolen (with no evidence of this, naturally) and that “responsible Americans may have to take to arms.” He also calls the incoming administration “domestic terrorists” and insists they are trying to turn America into Cuba.

Despite what the unhinged recesses of the internet have dreamed up, America has never been further from socialism in my lifetime. The fact that these people think that Joe Biden is some sort of entry-level socialist just shows how far to the right (and frankly, into outer space) the thinking on that side has become.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but should you be publishing letters full of hate that suggest there is some deep state conspiracy to turn America socialist (despite seemingly no understanding of the word) and calling “responsible Americans” to take up arms against their brethren? Surely not. You’re better than this. Or you should be.
