100Years Ago – 1920: The ornate and well-appointed home of the Chester Club, at 511 E. Welsh

St., erected and furnished at a cost of nearly a quarter million dollars, was formally opened and dedicated last evening when nearly

1,000 persons, members, their wives, daughters and friends, inspected the elaboratel­y equipped and furnished quarters. Modern in detail, equipped as it is along Colonial lines, words of wonderment and praise were expressed by everyone.

75Years Ago – 1945:

Approximat­ely 100 criminal cases including five murder trials are scheduled for the next term of county court.

First on the list is Raymond Moses – fugitive until last month – facing charges for the murder of Susie Bryant in front of her home at

320 Ulrich St., Chester, on April 6, 1942. The opening case of the second week of criminal trials is that of Woong Knee New,

38-year-old New Yorker, who is charged with the hammer slaying of Lee Joe, Chester laundryman, last June.

50Years Ago – 1970:

Although his popularity merits it, Pittsburgh Pirates ball manager Danny Murtaugh of Woodlyn, isn’t interested in a political career. “Baseball has been my life and it will continue,” said Murtaugh, 53, here today after he was named one of nine persons to receive a 1971 Pennsylvan­ia Award of Excellence. The award, given by the Governor’s Committee of

100,000 Pennsylvan­ians, will be presented Jan. 6 at Philadelph­ia’s BellevueSt­ratford Hotel.

25Years Ago – 1995: So you think State Street is bothersome with no obstacles and difficult to maneuver after a snow storm. Just wait. Work is expected to begin in February - at the earliest - with Philadelph­ia Suburban Water Co. replacing the water main and connectors for the full length of State Street from Providence Road to Lemon Street. Merchants are already registerin­g concerns about the ultimate impact the constructi­on will have on business.

10Years Ago – 2010:

After leading police on a high-speed pursuit that encompasse­d more than 30 miles of I-95, the driver of a stolen car elected to turn the chase into a footrace. The 19-year-old had just crashed the car he allegedly stole from North Lane in the Leedom section of Ridley Township, but apparently wasn’t ready to succumb to police. The chase began around 6:42 a.m. in Tinicum before coming to an end in Bucks County.
