100Years Ago – 1921:

Despite the financial problem confrontin­g Chester at the present time and the great need for the passage of an appropriat­ions ordinance for the fiscal year 1921, three members of City Council, who receive remunerati­on to the amount of $2,000 annually for their services, apparently did not consider it worthwhile to attend a regular session of the local legislativ­e body called for yesterday afternoon, their absence necessitat­ing an adjournmen­t and further delay. After waiting a halfhour, and a quorum not being present, Mayor Ramsey ordered the roll-call and then declared an adjournmen­t. Later, he issued a call for a special meeting to be held Friday afternoon.

75Years Ago – 1946:

Architects are soon to be engaged to draw plans for the Chester Branch YMCA to be located on a site on the west side of Tilghman Street below Seventh. The site, measuring 320 by 120 feet, is opposite Lamokin Village and title has already been acquired. Architects will also be put to work drawing plans for the main building.

50Years Ago – 1971:

Cassius Clay’s “Ugly Bear” is dead. Yet his memory lives widely for three prominent Delaware County men who knew Charles (Sonny) Liston as well as any and helped guide the destiny of one of the most powerful and controvers­ial fighting machines of the past decade. Chester attorney Garland D. (Bill) Cherry and Ridley Park residents Bob and Jack Nilon of the Chester-based concession­aire firm were associated with Liston throughout his turbulent rise and fall in boxing annals.

25Years Ago – 1996:

The 100th birthday celebratio­n of Von H. Byre started at his home on Wallingfor­d Avenue last Thursday afternoon, and it hasn’t stopped yet. He was visited over the weekend by Bruce Burns, Rick Shoaf and Max Hopkins, officers bearing fruit and flowers from the South Media Fire Co., which he helped to found in 1922. The company will also honor him at its annual banquet in March. Byre says that before the South Media Company was formed, Media covered the area “as best they could, which wasn’t very good.”

10 Years Ago – 2011:

From the Cop Shop column: Best wishes to Capt. Stephen Fox and Maj. Joseph Bail on their retirement from the Chester police force. The veteran officers, who have served on the city’s police force since 1973, officially retired on Dec. 31.
