100Years Ago – 1921: Edward Walton, alias Edward Bass, Lottie Walton, alias Lottie Bass, charged with cocaine selling and disposing of liquor without a license, were acquitted by a jury in court yesterday. The costs in the case were placed upon Nicholas Carter, a detective employed by the Culien Agency of Philadelph­ia.

His testimony against the Basses was not corroborat­ed. Hiram Halloway Jr., who defended the Basses, called as character witness for Bass, George W. Allen, warden at the Delaware County Prison, Elgin E. Weest and Mervyn R. Turk, attorneys, and Deputy Sheriff J. Alfred Howard. They all gave Bass a splendid character reference. They knew nothing but what was good of him.

75Years Ago – 1946:

An outline of planned municipal improvemen­ts in Chester during the next few years under a recentlyau­thorized $500,000 bond issue was given today by W. Alrich Price following his induction at City Hall as director of the department of accounts and finance.

Dr. John P. Nolanagain was given the oath as director of the department of streets and public improvemen­ts.

50Years Ago – 1971:

Danny Murtaugh, who has been on the receiving end of a host of baseball awards, received an additional honor Wednesday night at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel. Murtaugh, manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and eight other prominent Pennsylvan­ians, received the 1970 Pennsylvan­ia Award for Excellence at a dinner sponsored by the Governor’s Committee of 100,000 Pennsylvan­ians.

25Years Ago – 1996:

A city-wide sweep of local watering holes, dubbed “”Operation Bar None,’’ resulted in six arrests by Chester police. In addition, they seized five weapons - including one sawed-off shotgun - confiscate­d a large haul of illegal drugs and issued citations to 88 people for underage drinking. Police Commission­er Wendell Butler said Operation Bar None was prompted, in part, by an incident last month in which there was a shootout and near-riot outside of several bars.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

Darby Township is looking to eliminate a few of the unwanted side effects of snowstorms with a pair of proposed ordinances. If passed, residents who shovel snow back onto the street or utilize chairs (or other markers) to reserve parking spaces could face fines up to $300, Township Manager Jack Ryan said.
