100Years Ago – 1921: Spirited discussion, without result so far as disposing of important matters were concerned, marked the special session held by Chester council yesterday afternoon, the deadlock, relative to the 1921 appropriation ordinance existing since Dec. 31, remaining unbroken. Presumably, as the outcome of a “gettogether” conference following adjournment, the outlook is a trifle brighter for the accomplishing of results at a regular meeting of the council members to be held next Wednesday.
75Years Ago – 1946:
Portraits of three men who have made outstanding contributions in the development of the Chester Times today occupy positions of honor on the east walls of the Times lobby. The portraits are in the form of enlargements of the best available photographs of the late John A. Wallace and William C. Sproul, and of Charles R. Long, who having retired from the active responsibilities of newspaper publishing, continues to be a resident of Chester.
50Years Ago – 1971:
On the eve of the third anniversary of the general alarm fire that ruined Chester High School, the Chester School Authority voted 3-2 Friday night to award contracts to build a new one. Six contracts totaling $17,455,586 were awarded. A comprehensive
4-year high school complex for 3,000 students is planned to replace the school which burned Jan.
8, 198. Arson was blamed but no one was ever arrested.
25Years Ago – 1996:
The Blizzard of ‘96 is one for the record books - not that anyone will soon forget the snow that kept falling until 30.6 inches buried the previous Philadelphia record of 21.3 inches in a calendar day set during the Blizzard of ‘83. The high of
25 degrees, below the normal highs of the upper 30s, made conditions extremely hazardous.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
The Upper Darby Township zoning hearing board recently decided further study was need on a request to open a massage parlor and steam shower business above a nail salon on West Chester Pike. Billon Khmerkrom is seeking a variance to permit the massages and steam showers as well as relief from off-street parking requirements at 8418 West Chester Pike. The two-story property has been abandoned for years, the owner said. “People say they need a massage but have to go to Philadelphia,” Khmerkrom said. “I’m trying to bring customers to Upper Darby.”
