Virginia, San Jose St. latest women’s teams to end their seasons

The injury-depleted Virginia women’s basketball team has opted out of the remainder of the season, becoming the second Atlantic Coast Conference team to make that decision.

Virginia announced Thursday that the women’s team will not complete the remainder of the season due to health and safety concerns. San Jose State also announced its women’s program would not complete the season due to COVID-19 issues. The Spartans had previously paused basketball activities twice during the pandemic.

Two other women’s programs have also announced they would not complete the season: Duke said in December that the Blue Devils would not continue playing, which was followed days later by SMU opting out.

Virginia (0-5, 0-2) has canceled six games due to COVID protocols. The Cavaliers, who last played on Dec. 13.

“We have the pleasure of coaching a very resilient group of young women who have fought through injuries, a strict COVID-19 protocol, and all the mental battles that come with it,” second-year women’s coach Tina Thompson said in a release.

(11) OREGON 57, NO. 10 OREGON 41 » Aari McDonald scored 16 points and Trinity Baptiste had 14 points and six rebounds to help Arizona (9-2, 7-2 Pac-12) beat Oregon (9-3, 7-3), snapping a 10-game losing streak in the series.

(18) INDIANA 66, PURDUE 45 » Grace Berger had 22 points, five rebounds and seven assists, Mackenzie Holmes scored 20 points and Indiana (8-3, 6-1 Big Ten) outscored Purdue (5-5, 2-4) 20-3 in the second quarter.

Que Morrison scored 13 of her 17 points in the third quarter when Georgia (11-1, 2-1 SEC) erased a 17-point deficit and the Bulldogs held on to beat Tennessee (8-2, 2-1) for their first win in Knoxville in 25 years.

Gabby Connally also had 17 points for Georgia.
