Abbonizio leads Springfiel­d to win over Ridley

The Springfiel­d girls basketball team avenged its loss in last year’s Central League final and opened its new gymnasium in winning fashion Tuesday evening.

All-Delco guard and senior co-captain Alexa Abbonizio scored a gamehigh 17 points as the Cougars claimed a 43-35 victory over Ridley.

The Cougars (3-0) pulled away with a 19-3 run in the third quarter. The team made five 3-pointers in the period, including two apiece by Abbonizio and sophomore Lexi Aaron. Aaron finished with 10 points and three rebounds and senior guard Rachel Conran added eight points and four assists for the Cougars, who are off to a 3-0 start. Ridley was playing its first game of the season.

Shannen Hinchey led the way for the Green Raiders with 12 points and Emily Liberio chipped in with eight.

MARPLE NEWTOWN 50, UPPER DARBY 22 » Mary O’Brien sank three 3-pointers to highlight a 20-2 run by the Tigers in the second quarter. The Royals, in their season debut, shot 2-for-17 from the floor in the opening half and trailed 32-4 at the break.

Brooke Impriano tallied a game-high 12 points for the Tigers (3-1). O’Brien netted 11 points and Mackenzie Hilden contribute­d six points. Aubrey Ennis had a solid all-around game for UD with five points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds. Izaira Scott made two 3s for a team-high six points.

STRATH HAVEN 43, PENNCREST 36 » It was a successful season opener for the host Panthers, who closed with a 14-8 run in the fourth quarter. Faith Raymond scored 13 points and Rose Henry finished with

13 points for the Lions (0-3). HAVERFORD 31, GARNET VALLEY 23 » The Fords (11) notched their first win of the season on the road over the Jaguars (1-2).

In the Ches-Mont League: BISHOP SHANAHAN 53, SUN VALLEY 25 » Rory Teideman led the Vanguards in their season debut with 13 points. Jaina Preuhs added six points in the loss.

Boys Hockey

Zach Crain had a hand in four of the first five goals to lead Springfiel­d to a 7-0 victory over Marple Newtown in ICSHL Central action Monday night. Crain finished with two goals and two assists. Ryan Kertis and Devin DeStefano added one goal and two assists each, while Dominic Romolini pitched in with one goal and one assist. Luca DiMarcanto­no made 10 saves to post the shutout.

Matthew Beatty made 57 saves in goal for the Tigers. HENDERSON 4, PENNCREST 2 » Alex Holloway tallied two goals and one assists to help the Warriors build a 4-0 lead.

Dave Hartman got the Lions on the board with an assist from Tyler Conn in the second period.
