75 Years Ago – 1946:

General Carl A. “Tooey” Spaatz, deputy commander of the Army Air Forces, will land at Philadelph­ia’s Southwest Airport at 4:30 p.m. today and will proceed immediatel­y to Chester where he will review the PMC corps of cadets. Spaatz, who is said to be in line to succeed General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold as commanding general of the Air Forces when the latter retires, is coming to his city to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Aeronautic­al Science at the mid-winter commenceme­nt exercises of the Pennsylvan­ia Military College Thursday morning. The former director of the air war in Europe and later air chief in the Pacific will be met at the airport by the college commandant, Col. Frank K. Hyatt.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

Eight Delaware County school districts have lost another battle in their fight against state-mandated school district reorganiza­tion. The state Supreme Court has refused to consider the eight districts of appeals of State Superior Court decision which upheld earlier reorganiza­tions decision of Delaware County President Judge Henry

Barring some new legal or legislativ­e maneuver, the Supreme Court action means these new school district will be formed: Chester, Chester Township and Upland; Swarthmore-Rutledge and Nether Providence; Collingdal­e, Darby Township, Folcorft and Sharon Hill; Millbourne, Clifton Heights and Upper Darby; Interboro and Tinicum.

25 Years Ago – 1996: His head hurt and the police were treating him like he was drunk. Having hit two parked cars on the way to Crozer-Crozer Medical Center and being barely able to stand or talk, the driver said he can’t really blame the officers for doing their job last September. What he and his wife find hardest to understand, however, is why Upland police wouldn’t immediatel­y drop DUI and reckless driving charges when it was learned that he was having a stroke at the time of his arrest. All charges have been dropped against since the Sept. 6 arrest.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

Former Delaware County District Attorney Bill Ryan Jr. became the acting Pennsylvan­ia Attorney General when former A.G. Tom Corbett took the oath of office as the state’s 46th governor Tuesday.
