100 Years Ago – 1921:
Midnight will mark the close of the First Automobile Show, which has been in progress in the Armory, at Eight and Sproul streets, Chester, since Wednesday, under the direction of the Chester Auto Dealers’ Association, and when the doors are closed there will be brought to an end a most successful event. Representing a large outlay of money, the show has proved all that could be desired and those members of the association who displayed such a progressive spirit are well satisfied that their efforts have proved beyond doubt that Chester can put on a show the equal, and in many instances, the superior to shows conducted in the larger cities.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
Smedley Junior High School students were sent home from classes this morning for the remainder of the day when the illness of an eighth-grade student was diagnosed as diphtheria. This is the second school closing in recent weeks due to diphtheria.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
Purchase of the Pennsylvania Industrial Chemical Co. (PICCO) property at Delaware Avenue and Jeffrey Street in Chester, by Gould Inc. of Chicago, Ill., for its Bers Metals Division, has been tentatively approved, it was announced Friday by R.W. Ostermayer
Jr., PICCO president. At the time PICCO announced its planned phase-out of the plant here last November, there were 137 persons employed there. PICCO had peak employment here in
1965 with 260 employees.
25 Years Ago – 1996: From the Associated Press, Harrisburg – Road repair and cleanup costs from this winter’s blizzards and floods total $145 million - $30 million less than earlier estimates. Firmer estimates on the local road system are expected to take much longer as the damage assessment continues throughout the state. To help the state’s
2,500municipalities meet their cash flow needs as they repair and clean up, Gov. Tom Ridge authorized the early release of
$208 million in liquid fuels funding that was originally scheduled for distribution April 1.
10 Years Ago – 2011: Although February’s Pennsylvania slot-machine revenue was 17.6 percent higher than the winter-weatherimpacted month of February 2010, Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack was off by 2.01 percent. Harrah’s continues to trail only Parx Casino in slots revenue, however, taking in $24.2million in February.
