100 Years Ago – 1921: Chester Mayor Ramsey is receiving congratulations upon a narrow escape from death which he sustained several days ago while visiting New York City. Ramsey was ascending in one of the elevators of a downtown New York skyscraper with a friend and the operator in the car when the cable broke at the 10th floor and the trio plunged to the bottom of the shaft. All the safety devices that are supposedly designed to prevent such accident failed to work and nothing but the air cushion at the bottom saved their lives.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
The Republican machine’s county slate appeared complete this morning with the selection of Samuel H. Walker, Upper Darby commissioner, as a candidate for the state Legislature to succeed retiring incumbent Benjamin F. James. Walker was unanimously slated by the Wolfenden faction of the machine at a meeting held in Congressman’ James Wolfenden’s office, and attended by Upper Darby commissioners and ward leaders.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
There’s little that can kindle the ire of a homeowner more than the prospect of an apartment complex – especially a 740-unit venture – plopped within view of his home. “And there are at least several hundred township residents who today agree with this theory,” according to Philip Bale, 1716Galey St., Boothwyn. The proposed multi-million dollar apartment complex earmarked for development on 34 of the 134 acres known as the “Hanby Tract,” off Chichester Avenue and Larkin Road in Upper Chichester.
25 Years Ago – 1996:
Morton Borough Council President Dorothy McCaffrey said letters will be sent to Springfield’s zoning hearing board and commissioners listing council’s objections to a proposed Pathmark supermarket in the 100 block of Woodland Avenue. Councilwoman Dolores Giardina said these include traffic concerns, particularly impact on emergency vehicle access. 10 Years Ago – 2011: The Marcus Hook Preservation Society invites residents to learn more about the “Alligator,” the first submarine purchased and used by the U.S. government during the Civil War, and its impact on borough history during a special lecture on Monday. Speaker Dan Cashin will lecture on the vessel, which has ties to France and ocean explorer Jules Verne, at the borough community center on Delaware Avenue.
