100 Years Ago – 1921: Bethel Court is now a harbor, according to Horace Lutten, of Georgetown, Del., who claimed he was “looking for a boat,” when arrested by Officer Hardman for viewing the sights in the restricted zone. Lutten is the only prisoner who succeeded in getting his case reopened after forfeiting his bail. He was so insistent that he visited the home of Magistrate Elliot and walked right in on the “judge” while he was eating his dinner. His bail of $25was forfeited yesterday when he failed to present himself during the court sessions. “I can’t change the rules of my ship,” said Lutten to Sgt.

Busher when he arrived at police station about 11 o’clock. “We can’t change the rule of the court either,” Busher replied.

75 Years Ago – 1946: Major General William G. Price Jr., retired, wellknown Chester real estate businessma­n and formerly of the Army of the United States, wears the 77 candles he’s due on his birthday cake today, well. On the eve of his anniversar­y, the general aired his view on numerous topical questions with apparent informedne­ss. Sitting his office at 550 Edgmont Ave., he talked about Russia, the atomic bomb, compulsory military training, the UNO, the proposed Army-Navy merger and the recently much attacked Army caste system.

50 Years Ago – 1971: Fire swept the altar and sanctuary of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Marple at 7 p.m. Monday, causing an estimated $40,000in damages. Rev. Thomas P. Dowd, the rector, said the fire was discovered by a custodian who saw smoke in the auditorium as it spread from the sanctuary on the floor above.

25 Years Ago – 1996: Upper Chichester Township tax reform group QUEST (Quality Education with Sensible Taxes) has scheduled a meeting this week at Reliance Fire House to garner support for its planned lawsuit to realign the Chichester school board. The suit will seek a realignmen­t taking one seat each away from Marcus Hook and Lower Chi, giving one additional seat to Upper Chi and creating an at-large seat.

10 Years Ago – 2011: The United States Postal Service has confirmed it has executed a lease agreement for 1138 Baltimore Pike, formerly the Baja Fresh in Olde Sproul Village Shopping Center. While not a secret, the informatio­n about the new site had been circulatin­g around Springfiel­d as a rumor.
