100 Years Ago – 1921: Marking the end of the Lenten season, and recalling the resurrection of Christ, Easter Sunday will be observed variously throughout Chester, all the churches having arranged in recognition of this auspicious anniversary special services, appropriate discourses and a wealth of sacred music. It is a day when scores of the nonprofessing or happy-golucky class of churchgoers will wander into the “little church around the corner,” perhaps to get a new angle on life.

75 Years Ago – 1946: A delegation of Larkin School parents and teachers attended the regular school board meeting Monday night to request the paving of the school yard, and a similar request was received by mail from the Howell School PTA. The directors also approved a contract with the Veterans Administration to provide training for disabled veterans an added training for GIs.

50 Years Ago – 1971: The School of the Hoy Child has been in Sharon Hill for 107years. But in two more years, the school will close. Reasons? Primarily rising costs and the lack of teaches entering the religious orders. What will it mean to those involved? The answers will be provided Saturday in a full-age illustrated series of articles by four students – Alicia Bozza of Upper Darby; Victoria Glaudel of Lansdowne; Donna Kershner of Ridley Park; and Diane Terracciano of Philadelphia.

25 Years Ago – 1996: When U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon named a former Doobie Brother to head up a citizen panel on missile defense strategies, most Washington insiders scratched their heads. But, it was Jeff “Skunk” Baxter’s resume that made such an impression on Weldon, R-7, and the rock musician’s knowledge of the technical systems made the appointment fit. Some are now questioning Baxter’s resume upon learning he was not paid for consulting with such NASA and the Department of Energy.

10 Years Ago – 2011: Five motor vehicles, including two police cruisers, were struck by a Sharon Hill woman during a highspeed drive through four communities. The chase ended when police blocked in the 26-year-old’s vehicle. “This lady was totally out of control,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. The chase began when the woman fled from officers responding to a domestic call on Long Lane at 7:45 a.m.
