100 Years Ago – 1921:

Chester Rotarians went on record as against the proposed state taxation of one cent per gallon on gasoline and Secretary Sleeper was instructed to inform the legislator­s from this county to use their influence and vote against the measure. In other matters, 500starvin­g children in the Near East, at a cost of $10 each a year, will be provided for by the Chester Rotary Club. A like portion will be looked after by the Kiwanis Club.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

The motorman who operated the car involved in the crash with an oil truck in Tinicum meadows on the night of Dec. 28last, when the truck driver and four trolley passengers, including two children, were burned to death, yesterday placed the blame for the accident on the dead truck operator. The 42-year-old Philadelph­ia man who has been on trial since Wednesday on manslaught­er charges declared that he looked both ways as he stared to cross the Industrial Highway and saw the lights of no oncoming vehicles. He was past the middle of the wide dual highway, he said, when the headlights of truck loomed up.

50 Years Ago – 1971: From the editorial board: Chester’s Third Street Urban Renewal project seems to be a perfect example of what can be accomplish­ed if different agencies of government plus the private sector will work together. Although still on the drawing boards, this project will develop 22 housing units on a 3.69acre site bordered by Fourth Street, Mary Street, Penn Street and Concord Avenue.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

It is now against the law to hoist an open cold brew (or any other alcoholic libation) on public grounds, streets, sidewalks or vehicles in Ridley Park. The law does not apply to exterior grounds of private property.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

Chester Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. admitted he doesn’t fully understand soccer, but he has determined one thing – he loves seeing the camera shots of Chester that accompany nationally televised broadcasts of the Philadelph­ia Union. With the new decade just three months old, Butler used the “State of the City” at Widener University’s Latham Hall to highlight the improvemen­ts Chester has made during that span. The most visible changes have come along the waterfront.
