GRAB THEIR GUNS

I think it would be a great idea for judges to get the defendants arrested for crimes to turn in guns to get out on bail

... Sounds like a win win! With all the people that are arrested on a daily basis, even if you have three people a day turn in guns to make bail, that would be a thousand guns a year off our streets. Our communities would be a lot safer for our children and families and it would be a major stepping stone in fighting this war on violent crime!

PHIL IS THE MAN

Let us all pause for a moment and take a muchneeded time out from the daily barrage of Trump/ Biden bashing and offer hearty congratulations to a consummate gentleman and iconic basketball coach by the name of Phil Martelli. Certainly, no intro necessary, but in case no one noticed, that same Phil Martelli is on the verge of going to college basketball’s “Final Four” as assistant head coach to Juwan Howard in pursuit of a national basketball championship for the University of Michigan. Perhaps I’ll send a thank you letter to Jill Bodensteiner (director of athletics for men’s and women’s basketball on Hawk Hill) who was mostly responsible for Phil’s untimely release after approximately 25 years of building a men’s basketball program that compiled an impressive history of winning basketball. More importantly, countless young men who graduated from that program went on to become quality and productive citizens who have made a difference due in large part to Coach Martelli’s enormous positive influence and character that he exuded no matter the adversity that he faced. A great friend of mine once said that good players adjust and Coach Martelli remains a testament to those words. A giant thank you goes out to Phil’s immediate family and extended Saint Joseph’s family for tons of support all along the way ... and, by the way, congratulations to Jill Bodensteiner and the program’s stellar 5-15 record in 2020 and sincere thanks for making this all possible!

ONLY IN AMERICA

The Sound Off caller under “Melt Away” is right. Only in America we hear that one is Italian or Irish, but outside America, we are all known as Americans. There’s no such thing as one “looks American.” How does an American look? We are a melting pot of all nationalities. So stop asking “different “looking people where they came from. They are from the same planet and, like the caller stated, no one is superior or inferior to the other.

TAKE SOLACE

What an inspirational editorial, “Passover is a chance to embrace hope” (March 28) ! It states that Passover, similar to the Christians’ Holy Week, is “a balance between recounting tragic events and celebrating triumph.”

The editorial parallels the tragic events we are experiencing now with COVID and to focus on “hope and gratitude” when we could all one day celebrate thankfully the end of COVID. May I take this opportunity to wish a happy Passover to my Jewish friends and a blessed Easter to my Christian friends.

PEACE BE WITH YOU

DEATH IS THE ANSWER

Recent letters to the editor and many Sound Off’s address gun control and gun reform in light of the many shootings and lives lost on the streets of America. I think there has to be “Justice Control.” The old saying of “do the crime, do the time” is no deterrent for these criminals. They don’t care, they figure they’ll be out in eight to 10 years. Instead, we should bring back the death penalty, firing squads and the executioner. Dead killers don’t repeat their crimes. Public executions at 6 p.m. each day on local and network TV and the web might make someone reconsider using a gun to settle their issues. Remember, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns!

SPARKY

MONEY TO SPARE

I see Disney is preferring to release more and more movies via Disney+ instead of the movie theaters. If I’m going to pay $30 or more dollars to see a new movie I’d rather be at the theaters. Why should I pay that much to sit at home?
