100 Years Ago – 1921:

James Parkes, a barber, of Front and Penn streets, Chester, told Magistrate Elliot in police court today that it was all wrong to take a chance on anyone begging for food. Parkes took in a strange girl last night and gave her what he had and a few moments later there was an awful commotion at his door. “Somebody was knocking with a brick,” said Parkes. “While I was reading my Bible a voice demanded money or my life. I ran out of the house, from the rear, called the police from the Penn-Seaboard office and the girl and her two companions were arrested.” Each was fined $30 and costs and were held for investigat­ion.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

A new recreation­al program for boys and girls of the county, somewhat on the lines of the “sandlots” program in Philadelph­ia and other places, was inaugurate­d this week with the appointmen­t of Matthew A. Zabitka of Chester as a new Juvenile Probation Officer. His duty will be the “active direction of recreation of a county-wide and inter-community basis, by connecting up boys’ and other youth clubs now in existence, and to become existent, into leagues, tournament­s, etc.”

50 Years Ago – 1971:

Delaware County commission­ers will appeal a state order that the county correct alleged operationa­l violations at its incinerato­rs to reduce pollution. County Commission Chairman Harry A. McNichol called the order “vague,” and said Assistant County Solicitor Alvin S. Ackerman would be authorized today to appeal the ruling.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Aston Township took its first official step toward building a new municipal center and library as commission­ers appointed an architect and bond counsel for the proposed project. The project is expected to cost about $3.5million. Penn-Delco has donated 2.3 acres of land on the Green Ridge Elementary School for the center.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

Spinning the “Wheel of Fortune” wheel was a longtime dream of an Upper Darby woman who finally had her chance at the glitzy disk. The “Spring Fling” program, taped last July in Las Vegas will be aired Friday on WPVI-TV Channel 6. Mona Singh,

27, applied online in 2005 and was notified in 2010 to come to New York for an audition. Singh plans on watching with about 40 friends and family members at Casey’s Saloon, Drexel Hill.
