100 Years Ago – 1921:

Three boys, the oldest 14 years, were detected pilfering the Morning Republican “silent newsies,” yesterday at Fifth and Edgmont Avenue, Chester, and placed under arrest. Traffic Officer Feeney, whose post is at the intersecti­on of these streets, noticed the oldest boy thrusting his hand in the box and then beat a hasty retreat and join his companions who were stationed near the James Building.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

Six-year-old William J. Irving, of 3Pleasant View Ave., Boothwyn, lost his right hand yesterday when a shell with which he was playing exploded in his grandmothe­r’s living room, 42 N. 52nd St., Philadelph­ia. It was reported that the shell was one of several brought home as war souvenirs by the boy’s uncles, who lived at the North

52nd Street address.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

The Springfiel­d Township Zoning Hearing Board has approved plans for the constructi­on of a mall at Sproul Road and Baltimore Pike in spite of opposition raised by a group of Swarthmore and township residents. Assistant Township Solicitor Anthony A. Semeraro closed the hearing on the appeal of eight township and Swarthmore residents opposing the mall on March 11. After the hearing was closed, Swarthmore Property Owners Associatio­n President Daniel A. Jackson charged a “whitewash” by Springfiel­d in the hearings and placed “prime responsibi­lity” on Semeraro.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Chester Heights Borough Council is still studying the possibilit­y of enacting an earned-income tax for residents and employees in the borough. “A lot of people live here but work in areas that have wage taxes,” said council President Paul

Weyhmuller, who pays a wage tax in Limerick Township, Montgomery County. “We’d like to see that money stay in the borough.”

10 Years Ago – 2011:

The oldest VFW post in Delaware County, the Cpl. Wm. C. Greifzu VFW Post 598 in Darby Borough, will celebrate its 90th birthday this Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. The post, located at 816 Main St., will offer a buffet and live music, featuring The Emeraldds and 2nd Chance as well as Traces, a Four Seasons tribute band, who plays profession­ally.
