A HIT

Miss Flowers hit the mark with her article on April 1. She is correct. Let us say all the names. Let us call for justice and bring these two young people to swift justice. Let us say all lives matter. Let us call for equal justice for all.

THE SOUTHERNER

A MISS

Mohammad Anwar’s death was just as tragic as George Floyd’s death. The difference is that

Mr. Floyd was another Black man who died at the hands of the police. It is a shame that the enlightened conservative Ms. Flowers does not understand the difference. To people who blindly support the police or law enforcement I have bad news for you. There are bad cops who deserve to be fired and in some cases need to be in jail.

WHAT A MISS

Count on Christine Flowers to equate the killing of a Pakistani immigrant by two Black teenaged girls out to steal a car with the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer who held him down under his knee for nine minutes while he screamed “I can’t breathe!” Did the girls check the man’s religion or ethnicity before the attempted carjacking?

Did they even set out to kill somebody? Not according to news reports. Sounds more like a dumb venture gone awry. Hardly rates as a hate crime. Should those teenagers be held accountable for their actions? Absolutely. But to view this on the same scale as a white police officer knowingly squeezing the life out of an immobilized Black man is beyond belief.

OFF THE MARK

Christine, Christine, Christine ... do you really not see the difference between the murders of George Floyd and Muhammad Anwar? I know that a lawyer presents a picture to the judge/jury that is most favorable to his/her position, but the mental gymnastics you use are rather transparent. Are the “...(t)wo Black girls (who) killed a non-white man, a Muslim...” on the police force? Do they have a duty to enforce the law of their state? Were they deemed capable to “...cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others?” Christine, don’t you frequently condemn the media for inserting race in situations where race isn’t an issue? Is it somehow significant that the miscreants are Black and the victim is a Pakistani Muslim (but not significant that Derek Chauvin is white and George Floyd was Black?) Simply put: The two girls are thugs and criminals ... Derek Chauvin is a police officer. They should not be synonymous.

WAY OFF THE MARK

I agree with Christine Flowers that the death of Muhammed Anwar in Washington, D.C., deserves justice. His teenage attackers clearly need to be separated from society until they are rehabilitated to the point that they are no longer a menace to society. This tragedy is yet another instance of violence against Asian Americans. However, her false equivalency with the long, slow deliberate execution of a handcuffed Black man by former officer Derek Chauvin makes no sense. The all-toocommon police-involved killing of a civilian is not the same as a tazing by

13- and 15-year old girls.
