Lindor: Easy decision to sign $341M, 10-year deal with Mets

-

NEW YORK » Francisco Lindor was alone in a Washington, D.C., hotel room Wednesday night when he got the call from agent David Meter: the New York Mets had offered $341 million — $1 million more than Fernando Tatis Jr. got in February.

The biggest payday ever for a shortstop. “I wanted to yell,” Lindor said Thursday. “I wanted to scream as loud as I could.”

Lindor kept his cool — mostly — and told Meter to get it done. The sides agreed to a $341 million, 10-year pact on the eve of opening day, terms that could keep the four-time All-Star in Queens for the rest of his career. The deal kicks in for the 2022 season, meaning Lindor will be 38 when the contract expires.

“To the fans of New York, here we go baby!” Lindor said. “Here we go. We have 11 years together. I can’t wait.”

ROCKIES 8, DODGERS 5 » On an afternoon Cody Bellinger had a homer negated due to a baserunning mistake, Colorado played plenty of small ball to beat defending World Series champion Los Angeles.

The Rockies scored runs courtesy of a squeeze play, two wild pitches, a groundout, an error and three RBI singles.

Bellinger hit a homer — and was called out before he could finish his trot.He lined what appeared to be a two-run homer to left-center in the third. The ball hit Raimel Tapia’s glove and bounded over the fence. Justin Turner was on first and believing the ball was caught, retreated to the bag. Bellinger passed Turner and the umpires ruled Bellinger out.

Officially, Bellinger was credited with a single and an RBI, but no home run

BLUE JAYS 3, YANKEES 2 » Randal Grichuk led off the 10th with an RBI double, and Toronto took advantage of the second year of starting extra innings with a runner on second to beat New York.

TIGERS 3, INDIANS 2 » Miguel Cabrera homered through the snow in his first at-bat of the season, then added a sparkling play at first base to lift Detroit over Cleveland. PIRATES 5, CUBS 3 » Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a tworun homer and Pittsburgh’s relievers dominated in a two-hitter, helping the Pirates beat Chicago on a chilly opening day.
