100 Years Ago – 1921:

There is a sense of gratificat­ion for Swarthmore to know it possesses a man who has produced something that will make the world “sit up and take notice.” Dr. P.G. Hildebrand­t, a former resident of Havana, Cuba, and the child of his brain is a patented and fully protected process for converting molasses, first, into a liquid fuel, and then turning the residue into potash. The ups and downs of the experiment­al stage, a detailed descriptio­n of the mechanism he employs and the practical value and economy of the now fullydevel­oped and scientific­ally approved device today formed the theme for an interestin­g talk before the Rotary Club.

75 Years Ago – 1946: The Women’s Republican Club of Delaware County celebrated its 25th anniversar­y Thursday with a luncheon at the Bellevue-Stratford, Philadelph­ia. On hand to mark the quarter-century of growing participat­ion in county politics were prominent state, county and local officials, past presidents and directors of the club, charter members, and most of the 16women who, in 1921, first organized the group.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

The FBI’s alleged surveillan­ce of a philosophy professor at Swarthmore College has come under the fire of the college’s trustees. The agency’s check on 40-year-old Daniel Bennett came to light two weeks ago when newspaper received copies of documents stolen March 8 from the bureau’s office in Media.

25 Years Ago – 1996: The Delaware County Democratic Party has opened a homepage on the Internet. Party officials said the site is the first of its kind by a county Democratic organizati­on in Pennsylvan­ia. The address is http://www. voicenet.com/~delcodem. The website contains pages about endorsed candidates in the April 23 primary as well as party platforms, and fast links to other political Internet offerings.

10 Years Ago – 2011: Ridley Township have personnel installed strobe lighting at the traffic signs at the intersecti­on of MacDade Boulevard and Morton Avenue to bring attention to the red signals. Four teenagers were injured in a March 11 hit-and-run at the intersecti­on. State Rep. Joe Hackett, R-161, has requested PennDOT to do a complete and comprehens­ive traffic study there.
