100 Years Ago – 1921:
At the annual meeting of the incorporators of the J. Lewis Crozer Library, held in the directors’ room of the Cambridge Building in Chester, it was decided to take over the property of the Chester Free Library and conduct it for an indefinite period, or until such a time as the Crozer foundation has a home and equipment of its own. The J. Lewis Crozer Library is presently an entity existing under the will of its founder and namesake, though it never possessed any collection of books.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
Five Eddystone students are “land-lubbing” at school today, after giving polie and rescue workers a busy Sunday solving the mystery of their saga of the Delaware River. Stranded for six hours when their boat was pulled off Chester Island by the tide, the youths, aged 10 to 14, were rescued last night unharmed.
50 Years Ago – 1971: At a meeting in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, civic leaders and Chester officials led by Mayor John H. Nacrelli met with U.S. Sen. Hugh D. Scott, Sen. Richard Schweiker, U.S. Rep. John H. Ware III, R-9, and top HUD officials, to secure a $6.5 million grant for downtown revitalization projects. The two projects will include a shopping complex and an area for high-rise office buildings. The Downtown North Urban Renewal Area, geared for the shopping complex, is bounded by Ninth, Madison, Seventh and Welsh streets, properties from 5- to 27 E. Seventh St., and the area bounded by Seventh, Sproul and Sixth streets and the western bank of Chester Creek.
25 Years Ago – 1996: Haverford High School ninth-grade Christy Goodwyn won top honors in the 1996 Delaware County Women’s Commission Essay Contest. Goodwyn was the first-place winner in the ninth- and 10th-grade division for her essay on health care and health issues and was honored during a ceremony at the Government Center in Media. She received a $100 savings bond and a book for the school library. 10 Years Ago – 2011:
A New York television station is reporting that Libyan Prime Minister Moammar Gadhafi has canceled a scheduled meeting with former U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon. The report comes from Delaware County native and deposed Philadelphia TV anchor Larry Mendte, who is traveling in Libya with Weldon’s private delegation for WPIX-TV.
