U.D. Library holds virtual antique appraisal event

UPPER DARBY » The Upper Darby Township Library will host the “What’s It Worth?” appraisal program by Victorian Vanities via Zoom, 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 5.

Everyone is invited to find a treasure in their home and have it appraised online by John Thompson, an antiques dealer who has been in the business for more than 40 years. People must have an email address and one item for appraisal to participat­e and attend.

Upon registrati­on, participan­ts will receive detailed instructio­ns about how to take and email photos of their item to the library. Photos will be shown and discussed during the program. The librarian will assign a number to identify each item and help protect it and the participan­t’s anonymity. Only the photos and assigned number will be shared with the presenter, not personal informatio­n. There will be no appraisals of guns or Nazi memorabili­a.

An oral appraisal is based on how the piece looks, its condition, whether it is part of a set, plus several other factors not always immediatel­y apparent at the presentati­on, and what it

Yeadon Public Library partners with COSA to offer ‘Walk With Ease’ program

YEADON » The Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging, in partnershi­p with the Yeadon Public Library, is sponsoring the nationally recognized Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease Program for those 60 and older who need relief from arthritis pain or just want to remain active. The program will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, April 26, with a weekly online group meeting and will run for six weeks. The final session will be held on Tuesday, June 1.

Participan­ts will receive the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease Guide Book and will walk three times a week on their own with assistance from a leader in this self-directed version of the program. Participan­ts will share and receive support from a leader and other walkers at weekly online group meetings and will receive support, informatio­n and direction through weekly emails.

This

evidence-based

program is proven to reduce the pain of arthritis; increase balance, strength and walking pace; build confidence in one’s ability to be physically active; and improve overall health.

Program costs are covered by COSA so the program is free. However class size is limited. Registrati­on is mandatory.

Upper Chichester Library offers program on Beatles

UPPER CHICHESTER » A four-part Zoom series offered free by the Upper Chichester Library will investigat­e the allure and timelessne­ss of The Beatles. One-hour sessions will be held April 22, 29, May 6 and 13 at 7

p.m.

The program’s instructor is Andrew Behringer, an accomplish­ed area musician who is currently providing free ukulele lessons for library registrant­s. Each week a specific Beatles song will be examined, focusing on chord choices, key changes, use of vocal harmony, song structure, arrangemen­t, and the meaning behind the lyrics.

“The more I’ve learned about the Beatles’ music, the deeper my appreciati­on has grown,” Behringer remarked. “I’ve been thinking about planning this class for many years so I’m excited to share the passions I have for teaching, music and the Beatles with everyone.”

Media- UP Free Library holds pop-up book sale Saturday

MEDIA » The Media-Upper Providence Free Library, Jackson and Front streets, Media, will hold a pop-up paperback book sale starting on the Porch and continuing with social distancing in the Main Reading Room, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17.

The sale will feature $1 paperbacks for all ages. Masks will be required.

Library hosts forum to discuss mental health during pandemic

» J. Lewis Crozer Library, 620 Engle St., Chester, in collaborat­ion with the Drug Free Communitie­s Coalition, Boys & Girls Club of Chester, and the Chester Community Coalition, will present “Mental Health Matters in the Midst of a Pandemic,” a virtual Town Hall that explores mental health and substance use/abuse issues in the midst of COVID-19, 6 p.m. Thursday, April 22.

The event will feature expert panelists, student voices, Q&A, and a collection of helpful resources. Moderated by Tara Jones of the CAAT Center, the panelists include Lashira Council, LPC, CAADC from Chester Community Coalition; Dr. Marina Barnett, MSW, DSW from Widener University; Kathleen Gast from Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems; and Alexia Clarke, MPH from Chester Community Coalition. Ridley Township Library offers programs on Oscars, painting and more

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » The Ridley Township Library will host a number of virtual events this month.

Local residents can celebrate “The Oscars Past and Present,” 7 p.m. Friday, April 23. Film historian and author Irv Slifkin will show clips and discuss current and past Oscar contenders.

On Tuesday, April 27, at 7 p.m., artist Christine Burke will guide participan­ts to paint a lovely vase of flowers to celebrate a special Mom or other special person in your life at a “Blooming Together Virtual Paint Party.”

Ongoing virtual programs at the library include “Spanish Conversati­ons for Everyday Encounters” on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m., taught by Therese Taha. Rich Conti facilitate­s a “Ridley Writers Circle” on the second Friday of each month at 7 p.m. Apprise offers “Medicare Individual Counseling by Phone” on the last Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The library’s “Afternoon Book Club” meets to discuss current fiction on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m.

A non-virtual special event taking place on Sunday, April 18, is the library’s “Neighborho­od

Spring Scavenger Hunt.” People will need a mask and a smartphone to take part. Teams will receive a list of objects to find and will take pictures of them and submit them during the hunt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Swarthmore Library prepares for annual ‘Book It’ walk/run

SWARTHMORE » The week of Book It is almost here and Swarthmore Public Library has announced some final details for this year’s virtual event. Book It will include some new contests for this year’s virtual event, including a social media raffle and Scavenger Run. The scavenger hunt list will be released on April 24.

From April 24 to May 2, people can complete in the 5k Walk/Run. Suggested routes are listed on the library’s website. People can submit pictures for a social media raffle and Scavenger Run, with prizes from Bryn Mawr Running, Martindale’s Natural Market, and Longwood Gardens.
