Comedy of D.L. Hughley, jazz of Wynton Marsalis top this weekend’s events
Here are some events planned for this weekend throughout the region:
• Comedy superstar
D.L. Hughley headlines four shows this weekend under the heated dome at SoulJoel’s Comedy Club, Royersford. Performances are scheduled for 6 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Hughley is host of “The D.L. Hughley Show,” a nationally syndicated radio show. He is best known as the original host of BET’s “ComicView” from 1992 to 1993, as the eponymous character on the ABC/UPN sitcom “The Hughleys” and as one of the “Big Four” comedians in “The Original Kings of Comedy.” Tickets are $35, with VIP preferred seating available for $45. • The Spring Music Series at the Bucks County Playhouse, New Hope, presents benefit concerts featuring Wynton Marsalis with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Septet at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $250 for preferred tickets and $750 for VIP at BucksCountyPlayhouse.org. Proceeds benefit the playhouse. The ensemble performs a vast repertoire, from rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works, including compositions and arrangements by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus and many others. • The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has reopened Meadowbrook Farm, a 25-acre garden property in Abington Township that offers visitors the opportunity to experience the outdoors safely. Meadowbrook Farm’s health and safety plan includes social distancing, frequent cleaning of spaces and usage of masks. In addition, timed reservations will be required to enter the gardens to ensure safe capacity levels. The site offers free admission. This year, the gardens will highlight a bold and vibrant plant palette with contemporary plantings influenced by the history of Meadowbrook and inspired by modern plants and designs. New additions to the gardens will include a focus on vertical design elements such as columns, vines and hanging baskets. The gardens will continue to emphasize plants that attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. • Sellersville Theater presents shows by Paul Hammond & Friends today at 8 p.m. and Friday at 6 and 9 p.m., and David Broza on Saturday at 8 p.m. Paul Hammond and Friends features current members and alumni of Get the Led Out, a touring Led Zeppelin tribute band. They will play a mix of originals by the various members, some classic rock songs and a set of Led Zeppelin covers. Singer-songwriter Broza is playing his first in-person solo concert of 2021as a tribute to the healthcare workers and the community of Sellersville. He will contribute his share of the concert’s proceeds to Grand View Hospital’s COVID relief efforts. Broza is known for his whirlwind fingerpicking to flamenco percussion and rhythms and signature rock ’n’ roll sound. Raised in Israel, Spain and England, he has performed worldwide since 1977, when his song “Yihye Tov” first hit the airwaves, promoting a message of peace. In-person tickets range from $33 to $52.50 for Paul Hammond & Friends and $29.50 to
$40 for Broza. The shows will also be livestreamed. To reserve, visit st94.com. • Pottstown Area Artists Guild offers its April Masters of Art talk on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom. Rhonda Counts will talk about “Her Journey From ‘Disney Imagineering to Rhondartstudio.’ ” She spent 30 years creating for the Walt Disney Co. and retired from Walt Disney Imagineering, where she was inspired by the various techniques fellow Imagineers used in creating the themed environments within the Disney parks. “The most intriguing techniques are those used to ‘age’ a building or in transforming concrete into ‘natural themed landscapes,’ ” she said. “Based on these techniques, I work to develop processes that capture nature’s textural details.” The talk is free. • Building a Better Boyertown will hold its Coming Out of Hibernation event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Philadelphia Avenue. The event is a community celebration of springtime and all of Boyertown’s “Bear” sculptures coming out of hibernation for the year. It will include vendors, entertainers and crafters, all of whom will be socially distanced. The Elmwood Park Zoo will be bringing some lovable friends to talk about how animals hibernate and get ready for springtime, and KooKoo The Magician will be on hand to entertain.
