100 Years Ago – 1921: The campaign headquarte­rs of the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Associatio­n Community building campaign announced through Irwin Grossman, its publicity director last evening, that the Site Committee consisting of A.E. Lessey and Frank Berman, has closed the deal for the attractive J. Frank Black Mansion, at Fourth and Madison streets. While it is not stated just how much the purchase price was, it is known that the property has been valued at over $30,000 Alteration­s to the extent of $15,000 will be necessary to alter the spacious mansion so that it may be property adapted for the purpose for which it was purchased.

75 Years Ago – 1946: If enough Republican­s will vote in the May primary it will decide whether “a man will dare to aspire to public office without first having to get the approval of a machine or a certain leader.”This was the keynote of an address made by E. Wallace Chadwick in the “Town Meeting” of the Media League of Women Voters Tuesday night.

50 Years Ago – 1971: “If I can convince just one man in each country I visit to work for world peace, it will be worth the trip,” said Raguhbir Singh, citizen of the world and marathon bicycler for world pace. The 26-year-old New Delhi, Indian, native paused today in Delaware County for repairs to his well-worn bicycle, spoke to a public speaking class at the Delaware County Community College in Concordvil­le and left many persons reflecting on his message for world peace.

25 Years Ago – 1996: Federal agents from the Immigratio­n and Naturaliza­tion Service arrested three illegal workers at a local car wash, and four others at a West Chester nursery, according to an INS officials. All three supplied Social Security numbers and photocopie­s of records proving their immigrant status.

10 Years Ago – 2011: Aldan Borough Council unanimousl­y declared April as Aldan Girls Club Month in the borough. The long-establishe­d organizati­on for girls ages 6 to 16 offers softball, basketball, soccer and cheerleadi­ng. It also provides opportunit­ies to develop valuable life skills such as teamwork and leadership.
