100 Years Ago – 1921:
Returning home from a dance Saturday night, Miss Mary Kirk, 427Rose St., Chester, was attacked in the hall of her home. According to Kirk, she was walking through the hall and as she entered the dining room, she heard a noise behind her. Fearing capture her assailant struck her a blow in the face, which stunned her and gave him a clear path. The theory is the man was burglarizing the house when interrupted by Kirk. A lace curtain was found torn from its fastenings, probably to be used as a make-shift carrier for loot.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
Dr. John Scott Miller Jr.,
39, prominent Chester eye specialist and wellknown sportsman flyer, was killed late yesterday afternoon when his twoseater biplane crashed near Elkton, Md. Miss Emily Kline, of Prospect Park, Miller’s office assistant, who was a passenger in the plane, suffered only minor injuries. Miller, immediate past-president of the Chester Kiwanis Club, attended the club’s weekly luncheon Wednesday at noon at the Chester YWCA, then took off with Kline for Baltimore to pick up some optometrists’ supplies. The accident occurred on the return flight.
50 Years Ago – 1971: The FBI’s Media office was still open today despite reports it was to close. Agents are investing the theft of more than 1,000 secret files from the office and are seeking a woman who may wear a uniform or religious habit, it was reported Friday. The Philadelphia Daily News said in a copyrighted story that it has learned the FBI has assigned more than 50 agents to trace a woman who visited the office the week before it was burglarized last March 8.
