Notre Dame students give summer gift to Don Guanella clients
RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » A Communities of Don Guanella group home for adults with intellectual disabilities recently received a gift of new outdoor furniture, thanks to the generosity of fourth- and fifth-grade students at Notre Dame de Lourdes School in the Swarthmorewood section of Ridley Township.
Notre Dame teachers and students organized a “Crazy Sock Day” fundraiser and selected the Don Guanella residence as the beneficiary of the fundraiser. Donations went toward the purchase of patio furniture and outdoor yard games including ring toss, bean bag toss, and wiffle ball, among other items.
The group home, located on the grounds of the former Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish on Fairview Road is one of 26 community-based residences for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities operated by Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
The items were delivered to the residence by students complete with colorful, hand-made signs featuring summer-themed messages and well wishes.
Notre Dame de Lourdes School in is the parish school of Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Ridley Township. The school is committed to providing students the tools, skills, and guidance they need to overcome 21st-century challenges and flourish intellectually, morally, and spiritually.

Community invited to celebrate Korean American Citizen Day in Media
The Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation will celebrate “Korean American Citizenship Day” at the Philip Jaisohn Memorial House, 100 E. Lincoln St., Media, 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19. This year’s celebration will mark the 131st anniversary of Dr. Philip Jaisohn’s U.S. citizenship on June 19, 1890.
The keynote speaker will be Alan Crippen, the executive director of the Faith and Liberty Initiative, American Bible Society. At the event, the American Bible Society/ Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be awarded the Jaisohn Appreication Award. Nydia Han, TV journalist and host of “This is America and David Oh, Philadelphia City Councilman, will be awarded Jaisohn Advocacy Leadership Awards. The Philippine Nurses Association will receive the Jaisohn Medical CenterAsian American Coalition Service Award.
To celebrate this occasion, there will be a presentation of special resolutions and citations, along with Korean cultural performances by multi-instrumentalist Gamin and the Jaisohn Youth Academy Drum Team.
The event is being cosponsored by the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation, founded in 1975, and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs.

Media Rec offers trip aboard Spirit of Philadelphia
The Media Recreation Board is sponsoring a bus trip to the Spirit of Philadelphia on Saturday, Sept. 18. The tickets are $50. Tickets include the bus and lunch on the cruise. The bus will depart the Olive Street Garage in the Media Borough at 10:30 a.m.
The group will experience Philly in a way that only the Spirit of Philadelphia can offer. Docked just off of the historic district in Penn’s Landing, Spirit will set sail along the Delaware River and give riders spectacular views of the Philadelphia skyline. They’ll be escorted to the deck by a friendly marine staff and invited to visit the buffet where they can sample a little bit of everything or pick favorites.
