100 Years Ago – 1921: While at work as a laborer on the Pennsylvan­ia Railroad near Ambler yesterday afternoon, Lugi Cavallo, age 34 years of 1129 E. 11th St., Eddystone, met instant death when struck by a bolt of lightning. He was dead when fellow workmen reached his side. Two others were stunned, but revived quickly. Cavallo’s death occurred during a freak electrical storm. The sun was shining brightly when the trio became targets of the electrical phenomenon.

75 Years Ago – 1946: A Chester policeman narrowly escaped injury at Ninth and Kerlin streets early today when a motorist, who later was pronounced drunk, ignored his flashlight signals, almost ran him down and then plowed into the wreckage of a previous accident. Patrolman Stanley McDowell had to leap to the sidewalk as the car sped toward him shortly before 2:30 a.m., knocking an onlooker from the path of the machine as he jumped to safety. The 61-year-old Lennox Park driver was held in $500bail after being examined and pronounced drunk by a physician.

50 Years Ago – 1971: Delaware County residents appear to be overwhelmi­ngly in favor of holding the 1976 bicentenni­al exposition in the county based on the 5-to-1 results of a Daily Times telephone poll. The votes were: Yes – 2,916; No – 572. Media yearbook publisher-radio commentato­r Carl Mau, the main proponent so far of a county exposition, said he was “elated over the 5-to-1 majority.”

25 Years Ago – 1996: The Sixers will celebrate the NBA’s 50th birthday by christenin­g the new CoreStates Center when they play host to the Milwaukee Bucks Friday, Nov. 1. In addition to the new building, there will be a new president, Delco native Pat Croce, at the helm, a new general manager in Brad Greenberg, and a new head coach in Johnny Davis, and No. 1 draft pick Allen Iverson.

10 Years Ago – 2011: The Upper Darby health department condemned a house on the 6800 block of Clover Lane and are in the process of removing an estimated 30 cats and kittens. “The police called me and we’re working with the SPCA to get the cats out,” Assistant Health Director Matt Verdi said. This incident and one in Lansdowne involving 51 cats removed from a house at the end of June has the county’s agency filled with the furry creatures.
