100 Years Ago – 1921:

The initial move in organizing a Y.M.C.A. Newsboys’ Club was made this morning when it was announced, following a conference between

Orin S. Goodwin, Boys’ Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. and Mark J. McLaughlin, Circulatio­n Manager of the Chester Times, that membership cards in the new club will be issued this week. Present indication­s point toward at least 75 youngsters being taken in as “charter” members.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

Chester’s Ford Motor plant will be shut down Friday, idling 2,300 production workers for the second day within two weeks. Shortage of steel is given as the cause of the shutdown.

The order for the shutdown came from Detroit while local plant officials were attempting to maintain operations which were fast becoming clogged by the maritime strike.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

Nostalgia, tears and hope will mingle in the minds of marchers and watchers during Veterans Day ceremonies in the county Sunday and Monday. Nostalgia for past glories, tears for the men and women who have lost their lives in the service of their country and hope for a speedy end to the War in Vietnam. Danny Murtaugh, whose Pittsburgh Pirates recently gained baseball acclaim as World Champions, will be the major county parade’s grand marshal.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

From the AP, Harrisburg – Small Internet-access companies caught in a feud between telephone giants have temporaril­y warded off higher rates for reaching the worldwide computer network. Higher rates could drive them out of business, the entreprene­urs say. The companies and state Consumer Advocate Irwin Popowsky reached an agreement with Bell Atlantic to keep their rates for Internet access until Oct. 15, 1997. The PUC will vote on the agreement Nov. 14.

10 Years Ago – 2011: Described by many in attendance as a wonderful afternoon, Sunday’s dedication of the new 9⁄11 memorial in Lower Chichester was both touching and reverent. The centerpiec­e of the memorial, which sits in a place of prominence at the Rocco Gaspari Sr. Park on Hewes Avenue, is an 800-pound, 4-foot beam that was once part of the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Lower Chichester Township was one of 1,500 municipali­ties nationwide that was entrusted with an honored piece of history.
