100 Years Ago – 1921:
At last a saloon! It was with a plaintive sigh and in lugubrious tones that H.H. Walters, manager of the Bloomfield Pharmacy, at Broad Street and Morton Avenue, Chester, expressed himself today, when referring to the ruling of Secretary of the Treasury Mellon on the subject of sales by druggists of wines and malt liquors. “It is unethical and impractical for apothecaries to take over the business formerly cared for by saloons and hotels,” said Mr. Walters in the next breath, and though only the surface of the local situation has been scratched, the thought seems to reflect the general opinion of those interviewed.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
Asserting that a strong American Navy – complete with its auxiliary air power – can guarantee the security of the United States and the preservation of world peace, Vice Adm. Edward L. Cochrane today urged the retention of such a fighting force as he addressed a throng of several hundred persons at Navy Day ceremonies in City Hall Plaza. Cochrane, Chester’s highest-ranking naval officer, spoke after the battle flag of the cruiser Chester had been presented to
Mayor Ralph F. Swarts.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
The job of funding housing for victims of the Sept. 13 flood which has been assigned to the Chester Redevelopment Authority is off to “a pretty good start,” according to a CRA official. About 45families have been placed in houses out of about 200 who have made application for housing.
25 Years Ago – 1996: Sun Oil Co. has created a “Community Information Hotline” to provide local residents with current information about the Marcus Hook Refinery. Sun Public Affairs Manager Pat Prosser introduced the fully automated telephone information system to residents during a Lower Chichester commissioners meeting.
10 Years Ago – 2011: Attorneys representing the Pennsylvania Democratic Party delivered a letter to the campaign of Chester Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. on Tuesday, seeking the removal of a billboard showing images of Butler and President Barack Obama. The billboard shows Obama and Butler separated by the words: “The Obama Team Picks Chester and Mayor Butler and on Nov. 8th So Should You.”
