Delco Bar Associatio­n holds annual Veterans Casket Flag ceremony at memorial

NEWTOWN » The Delaware County Veterans Memorial Associatio­n hosted the Veterans and Military Service Committee of the Delaware County Bar Associatio­n’s Fourth Annual Flying of Veteran Casket Flags on Oct. 17. The annual event is a unique and powerful way for the Delaware County Bar Associatio­n to memorializ­e and celebrate the life and legacy of their deceased veteran members for their heroic military efforts and helping to shape Delaware County. DCVMA reserves the memorial grounds once a month to host casket flag raising ceremonies to commemorat­e deceased veterans. The flag draped across a veteran’s casket is flown high above the memorial proceeded by a solemn ceremony to remember his/her life and the sacrifices they gave for our nation.

At this recent ceremony, the following Delaware County Bar Associatio­n Members were honored: James R. Flick, Jr., Edmund Jones, Esq., Richard A. Mitchell, Esq., Howard Richard, Esq., Thomas J. Russell, Esq., and The Fallen Heroes of 9/11.

Springfiel­d Township Police Chief and President of the DCVMA, Joseph Daly, welcomed the crowd followed by Dennis Murphy, Vietnam Army veteran, Silver Star recipient, and DCVMA vice president, who led the ceremony. The casket flag raising portion was under the direction of Bill Kinney, USCMC, Vietnam veteran. The DCVMA offers the opportunit­y to celebrate a loved one, friend or colleague, fallen comrade or military ancestor at an upcoming casket flag raising ceremony at no cost to the general public. All ceremonies are held at 5 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month through April to November, weather permitting. Delco Technical School practical nursing program offers virtual open house

Differenti­ated by its venerated job placement record and exam passing rate, the Delaware County Technical Schools Practical Nursing Program is gearing up to welcome its next class of students in early 2022. Students are invited to learn more about how to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by attending a virtual Open House, 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17.’

The program offers students hands-on learning opportunit­ies, and nursing clinical rotations in facilities across Delaware County. With a 90% job placement rate post-graduation, many students are hired in their desired setting within weeks of graduation. The one-year program gives students the jumpstart in their career as LPN, and prepares them to sit for the NCLEX-PN Licensure Exam. Recently, the program achieved an 88% Passing rate for first-time test takers.

In a 2020 study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, the Practical Nursing Program was identified as a top Pennsylvan­ia higher education program for the money, based on a ten-year net value.

“The need for Practical Nurses has never been greater, especially in Delco,” said program Supervisor Kate McNamara. “Our 12-month program allows students to gain experience in the workplace while they complete their classes. We offer the best value for nursing education, and it pays off for all of our graduates.” The Virtual Open House will feature a full program overview, the current demand for LPNs both locally and nationally, video profiles of current and former students, and a live Q&A session with industry profession­als. Prospect Park shows ‘Hocus Pocus’ outdoors

The Prospect Park Recreation Board will show Disney’s Hocus Pocus in Park Square, 952 E. Park Square, Prospect Park, 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29. The community is invited to bring their blankets, chairs and snacks to enjoy a movie under the stars.

DCIU presents free parent training to resolve conflicts

Parents and caregivers can learn how to better communicat­e and resolve conflicts concerning their child’s education, 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15.

The Delaware County Intermedia­te Unit will offer a free workshop to help parents better navigate the often-challengin­g roadmap of educating their children with disabiliti­es or learning challenges who may need extra help. The content of this workshop, presented by Samantha Pudloski, the Office for Dispute Resolution program manager, is geared toward parents, but open to all. There will be no Act 48 or continuing education credit offered if a profession­al chooses to attend this workshop.

According to the DCIU, successful­ly resolving conflicts and communicat­ing well throughout a child’s educationa­l experience is more likely when everyone has developed necessary skills. Participan­ts will be introduced to key concepts including the conflict cycle, perception­s, positions and interests, and power imbalance, and provided with a six-step conflict engagement model. This interactiv­e training will allow participan­ts to assess their conflict resolution style and learn important conflict resolution concepts and skills that can be utilized when in a conflict situation.

Zabel holds mental health expo

In an effort to promote the numerous health and wellness services available throughout the region, state Rep. Mike Zabel, D-163 of Upper Darby, announced he will host a Mental Health and Wellness Expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5,t the Child Guidance Resource Center, 2000 Old West Chester Pike, Havertown. The event will feature profession­als, office staff and vendors willing to discuss how residents can improve their health and wellness.
