Let’s keep moving forward on Election Day

- Colleen Guiney (she/her), Chair, Delaware County Democratic Committee, Swarthmore

To the Times:

This Nov. 2, we have a choice between moving Delco forward or going back to the failed policies of previous generations.

Four years ago, we elected the first two Democrats to our county council and row offices since the 197’s. Two years ago, Democrats swept the remaining seats to take the helm of county government for the first time ever.

The new council inherited the most populous county in the nation with no Health Department at the beginning of the first wave of COVID. They took the reins of government with the only for-profit prison in Pennsylvania— one that had perverse incentives to keep our residents detained. The county had no public job postings, difficult to access council meetings, and a secretive budget.

What did the Democrats do?

They took on the challenges of COVID directly, by partnering with our neighbors in Chester County, and mobilizing the Delco Citizens Corps to set up COVID testing and vaccination sites across the County in a cost-effective manner. As a result, we are now among the top 10 most vaccinated counties in the state, with one of the lowest transmission rates. The council is working to establish our own Health Department in 2022 to address COVID and other public health concerns.

The county council has voted to end the for-profit prison contract, enabling the county to move to a non-profit model which will enable us to reduce recidivism and improve rehabilitation of those in the correctional system — and save your tax dollars.

We now have public job postings, online access to evening council meetings, the first Delco Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline and detailed budget information online.

In addition, the council has taken full advantage of federal CARES act funding and transparently administered the DELCO Strong programs, totaling $16 million in funding for 1,428 local businesses, and 130 nonprofits. An additional round of $4 million is coming in December.

We also were among the most effective counties in the state to distribute $30.6 million in federal rental assistance dollars, allocated directly to the landlords of 4,500 residents, to reduce evictions.

All of this has been accomplished with transparency, a focus on equity, and without raising your taxes! None of this cost an additional penny to Delco taxpayers.

Please help continue Delco’s forward progress by voting for Democrats Richard Womack and Kevin Madden for county council, Controller Joanne Phillips, Sheriff Jerry Sanders and Register of Wills Rachel Ezzell Berry so they can continue their work of effective, transparent and ethical governance for the People.

When you vote, please join me in sending a huge thank you to our county officials and Election Day workers for all that they are doing to make sure our Nov. 2 election runs as smoothly as possible.
