100 Years Ago – 1921: Market Street, Boothwyn Road and the Ridge Road, Linwood, will be paved before the year 1921 comes to a close, according to arrangement being considered by the State Highway Department. But the property owners, it is stated, hold the whip hand in the matter and by their refusal to sign the release, the work may not be done, but other localities receive the appropriations intended for the work here.
75 Years Ago – 1946: In a rare occurrence in the history of the county court, a juror was excused from duty after the case was heard. Mrs. Clara E. Doole, Upper Providence, sat through three days and a night session the LeamanPTC suit, and became so confused and upset that the judge and the counsels dismissed her from duty. Her husband stated that she had been unable to sleep on Friday night because of anxiety about the case. The remaining 11 jurors brought in a verdict in favor of the Leaman Transportation Corp., Downingtown, Saturday morning. The suit was a result of accident between a truck of the Leaman Corp. and a trolley owned by the Philadelphia Transportation Co. in Tinicum in December. Five persons were burned to death in the crash, including the truck driver.
50 Years Ago – 1971: For more than five years, Chester leaders have dreamed and planned for bright, new modern stores and offices in a downtown area revitalized through redevelopment. That dream took a giant step toward reality Wednesday with official word the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has allocated $1.3million for the first year of a Central Business District renewal project. 25 Years Ago – 1996: A fire alarm sounding in a residence led to the arrest of township man who was allegedly growing marijuana plants in his basement, Upper Darby officials said. The 42-year-old was served with a criminal complaint after firefighters responded to a fire alarm at his residence on Aug. 15 and noticed suspected marijuana plants growing in a temperature controlled container.
10 Years Ago – 2011: A Bucks County man was arrested for allegedly selling counterfeit discount tickets to visitors to the “Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride” on the grounds of Arasapha Farm in Edgmont Monday night.
