Wood boosts Carroll into PCL field hockey final against O’Hara

Back in September, Archbishop Carroll needed a goal from Courtland Schumacher with 2:56 to play to pull out a one-goal field hockey victory over Cardinal O’Hara.

The Patriots and Lions will square off again Tuesday at Neumann University (6 p.m.) with the Catholic League title and a berth in the District 12 Class 2A final at stake.

Carroll and O’Hara took care of business in the Catholic League semifinals on Friday. The top-seeded Patriots rolled to an 8-0 victory over No. 4 Archbishop Wood while the second-seeded Lions blanked third-seeded Bonner-Prendergast, 4-0.

Shannon Wood paced Carroll’s high-powered attack with three goals. Schumacher backed her up with two goals and one assist, while Cate McConaghy added one goal and two assists. Sienna Golden and Lydia Malone also scored for Carroll.

Annie Welde, Grace Atchison and Rachel Fossbenner led a strong defensive effort for the Lions. Maeve Boston, Kerryn Eise and Sophia Brown led the offense with one goal each.

Macy Szukics tallied a hat trick to pace the Churchwomen. Charly Bruder and Ashley Sessa pitched in with two goals each, while Olivia Corrato and Mia Garber added one goal

and one assist apiece.

Boys Soccer

Owen Black scored three times to lift Penn Charter to a 3-1 victory over Episcopal Academy. Black scored once in the first half and twice in the second half.

Akira Heath (one save) and John Malone (three saves) split the goalkeeping duties for the Churchmen.

Girls Soccer

Dani Shipon converted a pass from Maddie Shoup with 6:38 to play in the game to give Penn Charter a 2-1 victory over Episcopal Academy.

Quinn Whitaker gave EA a 1-0 lead off an assist from Lainey McGonagle in the 23rd minute. Olivia Linus tied the game for the Quakers on a penalty kick with 4:09 left in the first half.

Girls Volleyball

Senior co-captain recorded nine aces as topseeded Agnes Irwin opened the PAISAA tournament with a 3-0 victory over George School.

The Owls will host fourth-seeded Germantown Academy next Tuesday in the semifinals.

Golda Mehl led the attack with 10 kills and also stood out on defense with two blocks. Sydney Chen pitched in with five kills. AIS won all three games 25-11.
