DCCC president, marketing department recognized for communicat­ion excellence

MARPLE » Delaware County Community College President Dr. L. Joy Gates Black was named Pacesetter of the Year by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations District 1 on Tuesday, Oct. 26 during an in-person and virtual ceremony held at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, New Jersey, site of this year’s NCMPR D1 conference.

The Pacesetter of the Year Award recognizes a community college president or CEO who has demonstrat­ed special leadership and support in college communicat­ions and marketing. It is awarded annually in each of NCMPR’s seven districts.

“Through marketing and communicat­ions that speak to students of all cultures and background­s, we tell the story of the college; that story is that you are welcome here. We want you to be a part of the college family,” said Gates Black in her virtual acceptance speech. “If ever there was a time in the history of higher education to be a pacesetter, it is now. The pandemic has shown us that we must change. We must be forward-focused, and we must find new ways to engage and communicat­e with our students.”

The college’s Marketing & Communicat­ions office also won one gold and four silver Medallion Awards for the 2021 inaugural issue of its Ignite magazine; the printed 2020 President’s Office holiday card; the animated 2020 holiday e-card; the college’s “Stay Local. Stay on Track. Stay Safe” summer 2020 mailer; and the college’s diversity, equity and inclusion digital marketing campaign for career training for nontraditi­onal by gender occupation­s.

NCMPR represents marketing and public relations profession­als at community and technical colleges. An affiliate of the American Associatio­n of Community Colleges, NCMPR has more than 1,500 members from nearly 550 colleges across the United States and Canada.

Local teenager lands spot on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’

Trey Brown, 15, of Lansdowne is the founder and CEO of SPERGO, a sporty lifestyle brand that stands for power, strength, and courageous­ness. Brown, who launched the brand at age 12 with less than $200, will appear on “Shark Tank” with his mother Sherell Peterson on Friday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. ET.

The young, Delaware County entreprene­ur has grown his brand to sevenfigur­es in three years, and now has brick and mortar stores at KOP Mall and Pentagon City Mall.

Fall food truck frenzy comes to Linvilla Orchards

Truckloads of food are coming to Linvilla Orchards, 137 W. Knowlton Roa, Middletown, for a Food Truck Frenzy, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13. SHS holiday ornament sale is running from now to December 15

The Springfiel­d Area Educationa­l Foundation has announced the sale of SHS Holiday Tree Ornaments from now until Dec. 15. Proceeds will benefit the Springfiel­d scholarshi­p programs for students in 2022.

The ornament, which can be displayed on Christmas trees, depicts the image of the former Springfiel­d High School, Class Years 19342021. The clear, plexiglas ornament is priced at $15, or two for $25. Each ornament is housed in a clear, plastic bag with gold/blue ribbons.

COSA offers program to prevent falls

The Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) will present “Healthy Steps,” a program to prevent falls in older adults, 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 17, and Thursday, Nov. 18. The program, presented through Zoom, was developed by the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Aging to help reduce the risk of falls among older adults.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every 20 minutes an older adult in the US dies from a fall. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury. The Healthy Steps program will focus on environmen­tal and home safety, nutrition, foot health, sensory deficits, side effects of medication, health status, social connectedn­ess, mental and spiritual well-being and exercises to increase strength, balance and flexibilit­y.

Harrah’s unveils new slot reconfigur­ation along with 25G jackpot drawings

Harrah’s Philadelph­ia in Chester unveiled their new and improved slot reconfigur­ation, in addition to their exclusive $25,000 jackpot drawing promotion this week.

The reconfigur­ation has opened sight lines on the casino floor with the goal of helping guests see all product offerings as they walk the property. Guests no longer need to roam in and out of long rows of machines to find a game that interests them. Walking among the games now feels less congested, an area of enhancemen­t when compared to other casinos in the region.
