100 Years Ago – 1921:

Four more lawsuits were started yesterday against the County of Delaware, aggregatin­g $80,000damages by four plaintiffs, as a result of the collapse of a part of Third Street Bride in Chester on the night of Sept. 10, when 24 persons were drowned. State Sen. Albert Dutton MacDade is counsel for the plaintiffs, who are all from Chester. Two of the suits are to recover damages for the death of two girls, Josephine Lipski and Dorothy Whittingto­n.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

Darkness lay heavily over Sun Ship’s many idle ways at 6:42 p.m. Friday as Mrs. Chester W. Nimitz, wife of Admiral Nimitz, wartime chief of United States’ Pacific Fleet, christened the SS “Utrecht,” last of the ten ships launched for the Netherland­s government. John G. Pew, president of Sun Shipbuildi­ng and Dry Dock Co., has been made “Commander of the Order, Orange Nassau,” one of the highest honors stowed upon civilians by the Royal House of the Netherland­s.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

Democrats made heavy inroads throughout Delaware County in Tuesday’s elections, grinding out victories in important local races and slashing Republican pluralitie­s in county row office contests. However in the encounter for District Attorney, Stephen J. McEwen Jr. won a second term by kayoing Democrat Jack Brian, 104,167 to 81,338. Especially significan­t was William A. Spingler’s triumph over incumbent minority county commission­er Edward T. McErlean and the closeness of his vote count to that of bigname Republican Harry A. McNichol, trailing by only 11,000 votes.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Motorists passing through the intersecti­on of Valleybroo­k and Llewelyn roads in Chester Heights are greeted warmly by Charles and Jean DiSalvo, proprietor­s of a small fruit and produce stand that has stood the test of time in this close-knit community for 70years. Charles, 72, and Jean, 68, have lived in the white farm-style house next to the Chester Heights Fire Station since their marriage in 1948. The house and small adjacent store was built by Charles’ grandfathe­r, James Curran, in 1926and passed down from generation to generation.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission Board of Directors recently awarded $290,000 to Haverford for constructi­on of a 1-mile, multi-use trail along Darby Creek.
